  • The vocabulary of a foreign language.
  • The correct names for the specialized objects in any technical field.
  • These usually have to be overlearned so that accurate recall is no effort.
  • Treasure hunts can provide serious games to practice that vocabulary skill.
  • They can also  provide formative assessment indicating level of achievement.

I try to remember to make free items I find lying about able to be copied when permitted. If ever you see something that your concerned about please let me know. My goal is to support the opensource community by keeping resources free and shared. Many awesome and inexpensive resources I find on the Kitely market. Digital Badge Program
to Recognize Language Proficiency
The badges are coming.
Badges can replace academic degrees and target specific job description needs.

ACTFL and Language Testing International (LTI), the exclusive provider of ACTFL assessments, are pleased to announce a new digital badging program through Credly. Digital badges are now issued to students in higher education institutions and adults completing an official ACTFL proficiency assessment, and may include the associated ACE CREDIT recommendations for the ACTFL assessment taken. These badges will recognize the effort involved in learning a language and provide evidence of an indispensable, validated skill.

  • Watch on YouTube
  •  A fourth grader models the goal setting process through a coaching dialogue.
  • Coaching and monitoring need constant attention to detail.
  • That takes time.  A DTA can take the time if the teacher cannot.

Microcredentials for the teachers,

All learning is microlearning,

Learning requires focus.  Focus needs a goal.  Progress is one step at a time.  Badges mark the steps.  Teachers don't have time to manage all those badges.  Computers do have the time.

2020 #VWEDU: Introducing Virtually Anywhere in Second Life language-learning project. Narrative-based learning (PBL) for languages. Pionia Destiny presents.

Introducing Virtually Anywhere in Second Life
language-learning project.
Narrative-based learning for languages

Narrative-based (project-based) learning of a second language. Following narration concentrates attention on the language.  And a project can exercise the production of that language.   Virtual scenes related to the story can provide and environment for developing the story.

The instruction

  • Virtually Anywhere is a trans-media experience for language learning.
  • Students collaborate in the creation of a new fiction based on an existing series.
  • The story line is from the audio series by Cambridge Assessment English.
  • The series is about students struggling with coursework.
  • A mentor appears and takes them on travels to virtual scenes.
  • The virtual scenes fit with the narrative.
  • The narration is entirely in the target language.
  • The project is to write new episodes in the target language.
  • The virtual scenes provide an environment for the new episodes.

2020 #VWEDU Immersive language learning and: Why would you do a presentation this way? Use the powers of the Digitals.

Immersive language learning and:
Why would you do a presentation this way?
Use the powers of the Digitals.

We digitals have a new set of powers in the digital worlds.  We don't have to do things the old way.  We can do things in ways that are more productive in fitting our objectives.

.
  • Heike Philp / Gwen Gwasi;
  • Jennifer Hamilton / Jaz Beverly;
  • Annalisa di Pierro /Innesfree;
  • Helena Galani /erlinaazure

Problems

  • The presentation is 50 minutes long.  Few people will spend that long on a video.
  • The audio is not of good quality.
  • Using the powers of the digitals on these problems.
  • One power of the digitals is search on page.

2020 #DTA: #VWEDU: Leaderboard alternatives in education managed by a digital teaching assistant (DTA): Recent rate. Rate per badge. Gamification

Leaderboard alternatives in education
managed by a digital teaching assistant (DTA):
Recent rate. Rate per badge.  Gamification.

Many educators see motivational problems with leaderboards.  A digital teaching assistant can support alternatives that may offer better gamification and better motivation.
The Empty Classroom
Taking notes is not the only skill

Do leaderboards motivate everyone?

  • Leaderboards in education
  • If you are way ahead, you can slack off.
  • If you are way behind, you can give up.
  • Some see themselves falling farther behind every week.
  • How does a leaderboard work in games?
  • Games are short.  Soon you start a new game with a clean slate.
  • You get to pick your game.  You have a choice.
  • A digital teaching assistant (DTA) can easily handle the implied adjustments

2020 #VWEDU: Can schools be preparing students for future work, if working online is not part of the curriculum?

Can schools be preparing students for future work,
if working online is not part of the curriculum?

The old way of teaching does not work any more. It never did work very well for a lot of students.  Not even for students who figured out how to game it and so made good grades.  Sure we stored a lot of knowledge, but we never learned how to use most of it.  Because it was only good for passing tests and that is not what adults need to do.

2020 #VWEDU: #DTA: A learning place with a DTA can handle asynchronous study, but should it? I thought yes, but a teacher told me why I was wrong.

A learning place with a DTA can handle asynchronous study,
but should it?   I thought, yes.
but a teacher told me why I was wrong.

Students have their own circadian rhythms that may not match those of the school.  They have always had flexibility in scheduling homework.  Online learning could allow more flexibility, especially when a digital teaching assistant (DTA)  is available to help.  And busy teachers do not need to be spending time with students who do not need help.  When can students study with only the aid of a DTA?
