"Engaging Students in Goal Setting and Monitoring Progress."
How much coaching and monitoring could be provided by a DTA?
Effective education teaches goal setting and planning
- Watch on YouTube
- A fourth grader models the goal setting process through a coaching dialogue.
- Coaching and monitoring need constant attention to detail.
- That takes time. A DTA can take the time if the teacher cannot.
- Learning objective for students.
- Student can set a concrete objective and prepare a credible plan for reaching it.
*********************
That's how a teacher does it (planning)
- Starts with a list of actions required for a credible plan.
- Asks the student to provide concrete details
- Evaluates student response.
- Provides coaching hints if the response is inadequate.
- The plan includes a schedule that the teacher can monitor.
How a DTA would do it.
- The teacher tells the student to work with the DTA>
- The DTA has the same list of actions the teacher has.
- The list is adjusted for level of student preparation.
- The student is asked to fill in the items with help as needed.
- Help can come from the DTA, parents, or teacher.
- The DTA offers a Help button on each item.
- The Help button offers commonly needed suggestions.
- Teachers with experience in teaching this task will know the suggestions.
- Teacher can monitor each student's work and give feedback as needed.
- The plan includes a schedule that the teacher can monitor.
How a teacher does it (monitoring)
- A schedule is a list of concrete subgoals and when they are to be completed.
- Concrete means one can make an objective determination of completion.
- The subgoal could be: Pass a test or turn in assigned homework.
- The teacher keeps a record and will inform a student who is not doing well.
How a DTA would do it.
- Some subgoals would be completed under the supervision of the DTA or a LMS.
- (A DTA might be part of a LMS.)
- The DTA would automatically record those; the teacher would enter the others.
- The student would always have a current record of progress.
- The record could be used as a basis for gamification.
