The forking of virtual world uses opens up a great vista of opportunities for entrepreneurs.  Ann and Selby discuss some upcoming forks and a few possibilities they offer.  

 Ann Tree Prenyour*:  Software developers pay attention to forking software.  My people pay attention to forking demand.  Sometimes forking demand stimulates forking software.

Selby:  What is interesting about forking demand?

Ann:  It creates opportunities for new businesses.  We are always interested in the road less travelled.  And a demand fork is bound to lead to at least one of those.  In this case, virtual worlds are splitting into at least a three-pronged fork.  That's high tech, middle tech, and browser tech.  And that matches a pyramid of demand.

 are miniatures--if you want them to be.
Virtual worlds are not new.  We have seen them for centuries.  Beautiful, hand-carved miniatures on coffee tables, bookshelves, display cabinet shelves.  Replicas of trains, planes, ships, automobiles, animals, armies, almost everything.  Now you can make them on a computer and print them in 3D.

As you fly around in virtual worlds sometimes try turning off your suspension of disbelief.  What you are seeing is a small replica of something you might see in the "real" world.  Some of these replicas are amazingly good.  But stop admiring the art for a moment and think business.  
You are looking at a computer-generated 3D image.  You can sell this 3D image to people in virtual worlds.  You can also go to Shapeways and have them render it in 3D in the "real" world.  People buy "real" miniatures all the time.  Can you sell miniatures like this at a price people will pay?  Look below the break to hear Ann Tree Prenyour say, "It depends."

            Community building in virtual worlds can be a business if you are selling things to the members or renting them property.  Ann Tree Prenyour offers her comments on the idea. 

            Selby:  Community building is a business?

            Ann:  Can be.  Is for some people in Second Life.  Probably will be for some people on the Hypergrid.  Bound to be if they are in my family.  My family is always thinking business.

            Selby:  Ok.  There are some sailing communities in SL that are built up by people renting land or sea access to the people who sail.  The land owners may also sell products relevant to sailing,  So that would be a business based on the sailing community.  And it would benefit from the growth of the community.

                        I called on the people in my head to develop plans for a Hypergrid Chamber of Commerce: the why, the what and the how.  Here I report the discussion in my head about HGProjects.

                        • The destination board for OSCC was well designed.
                        • Located in the center of many sims.
                        • With standard signage.
                        • With teleports well organized.
                        • And destinations described by content.
                        • Just the kind of thing the HGProjects would do
                        When I heard that someone wanted an article from me about a Hypergrid Chamber of Commerce, I called on Ann Tree Prenyour, one of my head alts, to give some advice.

                              Ann:  I've been critical of people in virtual worlds.   I want a chance to say something good.

                              Selby:  You mean a promotable idea for making money.  
                              -
                              Ann:  Nothing is promotable long term unless it benefits the customer.  Actually, the benefit to the customer is what makes it promotable, at least long term.   This idea about outsourcing the tier is promotable that way. And clever.  That's why I want to tell about it.
