Here's a video from an afternoon at Panthalassa. One of my favorite regions in Opensim. Kayaker Magic has dinosaurs, surfing, an archery range, and boats that even I can drive.  He has boat races here every Sunday at 2 or 3 pm PT.

          Gardens, Landscapes in virtual worlds 
          RezMela™  plans a garden in real time (about 13 minutes).   Imagine this method used in designing gardens and landscapes. Or in real estate.

          • Show the customer what could be done with that bare backyard.  
          • Or let the customer play with the design herself.  
          • The system is quite easy.  The plants are there at the side.  
          • The user is picking what to place and placing it with the click of a mouse.
          • The customer can walk through the garden, look at it from any angle.
          • The customer can save the garden and return later.
          • Or recreate it to show friends.  I like to imagine demos on a 40 inch monitor.
          • I imagine the old Tupperware parties, redone as computer gardening parties.  
          • A planning package could be available on the web or for download.

          Where is everybody? How do I find people?

          OpenSim offers land, lots of land. All virtual, so it doesn't take much upkeep. When we connect it together with hypergrid, it is much too big for people to find friends easily. That is the same as in a big city. When you move to the big city and want to find friends, you have to work at it a bit. Here is how to do that in virtual worlds.
          • Entering a virtual world is a lot like moving into a new town.
          • Read the local news, find what is happening around you.
          • Join local groups that do things that interest you.  
          • Make yourself visible to the local community
          • Go to events that interest you. 
          • Pay attention to people's names.  (You can see floating name tags.)
          • Find people in the region (Firestorm People Button) if you don't see them.
          • Post about your interests in group chat.  
          • Watch group chat for things that interest you.
          • Watch chat at events and meetings.
          • Most people in virtual worlds want to talk to people with similar interests.
          • If you want friends, be very public about your interests.
          • Virtual worlds are about people. Communities, communication, shared goals

          NMA has begun development on a community-based entry path into opensim grids.  The objective is to get new users started in the community as quickly and as easily as possible.  Toward that end, the current entry path (1) gives some initial instruction on the web, before entry; (2) brings people into the NMA welcome site, not the generic grid welcome site; (3) invites newcomers to join the main community inworld group so that they can quickly get acquainted with active community members.

          Community-based entry paths on the hypergrid
          Updated 5/24/2016
          New people coming into virtual worlds often wonder where to find people and what to do next.  A community-based entry path reverses that pattern:  start by finding friends and discovering what is already available that fits your interests.  Then come into the virtual world directly on a path and to a place set up by the community.  You already know people in the community and can quickly contact them inworld.  

          Community entry method

          • The community establishes a Google+ community for outworld contacts.
          • The community is open for joining, no approval required.
          • Community members post about activities and events in the G+ community.
          • The G+ community and the community web page link to each other,.
          • The community web page carries instructions for entering virtual worlds.
          • If the community has set up its own welcome site, the instructions lead there.
          • The community welcome site has a join panel to the main community group.
          • The entry instructions tell new people to join the group and introduce themselves.
          • The entry instructions and arrival point have instructions for starting in a virtual world. 
          • When people come in, they have friends and are in the community space.

Originating in the 8th Century AD, the Katauta is a poem of 17 or 19 syllables arranged in 3 unrhymed lines of either 5,7,7 or 5,7,5 syllables that asks a question.                   2016 BIZ: HG: DDOS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks on OpenSim grids. What can we do?

                  DDOS attacks on OpenSim grids.  
                  What is the effect?  What can we do?
                  Two grids on the Hypergrid recently experienced DDOS attacks.  This article explains in layman's terms, what a DDOS attack is, how it will affect you, and what you can do about it (not much).  This is an issue that may lead grid operators to organize and meet to explore methods of making such attacks less effective.

                        Money on the hypergrid is not that simple. 
                        HGProjects 
                        People coming to the hypergrid from a monogrid world like Second Life or Inworldz are likely to be confused about money.  Monogrids usually have their own money and it is, of course, the same all over the grid.  Hypergrid is a multigrid environment.  You can easily TP to a different grid via the hypergrid protocol.  Since money is managed at the grid level, going to a different grid may take you to a different money system.  You deal in different currency, the currency may not be controvertible to dollars, the money you had in your home grid may not be available or useful to you in another grid.

                        What happens

                        You go to another grid; they use a different currency. You currency is useless or seems
                        to be gone.
                        -
                        You sing on another grid.  You could get tips in their currency, but you can't exchange that for your real money and have no way to spend that currency.
