OpenSim: get sim visitors to the right destination.
Skill sets: land manager, event manager.
An example of use-organized instruction.
Use-organized instruction:  Instructions grouped by skill sets needed for specific functions.

  • Those little signs around the wall are not just signs.
  • They are walkin teleports.
  • An avatar walks into them and arrives at another part of the island.
  • You can get them on Kitely Market by searching for teleports.
  • Other kinds of teleporters are available.

2020 HG: HELP: An OpenSimulator place can be big, with many destinations. The landmark solution. Land manager skills

An OpenSimulator place can be big,
    with many destinations.
    The landmark solution.
    Land manager skills
How to get the public to the place you manage with a landmark.  A Land manager skills set for those who want level up.  Other travel methods and Land manager skills will be covered in later articles.
    A landmark is even faster
    • A sim in OpenSimulator can be much bigger than 256X256 meters.
    • On Kitely, the available sizes go up to 1024X1024 meters.
    • That is over .6 mile on a side,
    • Depending on where you live that is from six to twelve city blocks.
    • You could have a dozen destinations of public interest there.
    • You need a way to get people to where they want to go on your place.
    • Furthermore, you often need a way that you can post in plain text.

    Travel methods for the Hypergrid

    • Landmark: Best method, but can only be given inworld.
    • Hypergrid address: in plain text, but only goes to a sim, not coordinates.
    • Firestorm hop: in plain text, may only work in Firestorm, only works for users in the grid it directs to.
    • Walkin or on-click teleport:  A device located inworld.

2016 HELP: Running a big region in OpenSim. Lagbusters

Running a big region in OpenSim
OpenSim allows Varregons much larger than the old standard of 256X256 meters.  Kitely offers 1012X1012m.  (1012 m. is about .6 mile.)  Other places may offer even bigger regions. These are still running on one server, though, so they don't have a corresponding increase in prim or avatar capacity.  (Kitely Advaced Worlds have a substantial increase, but not enough to fill the area.)   Here  are some suggestions for building and operating such a region for public use.
Walkin TPs at Cookie II entry point

    • The standard arrival point is at 128,128 in the southwest corner.
    • Best take that and work with it.
    • A big region is too large to expect people to find places without help.
    • Walkin TP's are a good way to get visitors to their destinations.
    • If the walkins at Cookie II entry point are not free to copy,
    • go to the Hobo Sandbox entry and take a copy of the Thinkerer box there.
    • Phantoms are good for your virtual world

2018 EDU: Use social 3D on the web: what you need to know

Use social 3D on the web:
    what you need to know

Social 3D activities are social activities in virtual three-dimensional spaces.  Some such spaces are coming available on the web, meaning that you can visit them in your browser with no preparation.

    Web-world for nonprofits
    and public service organizations

Two Web worlds in public beta

    • 3DWebWorldz
    • CybaLOUNGE
    • Yes, these links take you to flat web pages in your browser.
    • You can you can enter either of these as a guest, without registering.
    • But you will need to pick a name and, in CybaLONGE, pick an avatar
    • And if you want to connect with friends, you will have to register.
    • Web-worlds, 3D virtual worlds running in a browser. Summary
    • To get the best results, use Chrome.
    • Firefox may work, but may have trouble with voice.

2017\8 IMA: PROMO: In user-built virtual worlds: we can play, work, create, collaborate, and share with other people

User-built virtual worlds: where we can play, work, create, collaborate, and share with other people

User-built virtual worlds are a form of virtual reality with standard user controls developed in Second Life and extended to OpenSimulator. The standard user controls let users move from one virtual world to another without having to learn new control methods. Users build worlds to suit their purposes: Education, art, entertainment, storytelling, games, sailing, racing, model railroading.

    User-built

    • We get or make avatars to represent us in the virtual worlds.
    • We can build things to make our virtual world look the way we want.
    • We can write scripts to make our things do what we want them to do.
    • Or we can buy things already built and scripted and put them in our places.
    • It is much like furnishing a home.  And we can have virtual homes if we want.

2017 MESH: IMA: The secrets of mesh, uploading and physics in OpenSim. Simple, clear, accurate

Secrets of mesh, uploading, and physics in OpenSim.
    Simple, clear, accurate
Videos and screen shots by Tampa Powers showing how to upload mesh correctly, explaining Level of Detail (LOD), and showing why attention to LOD and the collision surface matters.

OpenSim - How to upload mesh

Since the changes were made in .9 some people seem to have some trouble understanding on how to upload mesh properly. Maybe I can help by showing how I do it now, which seems to work fine for the most part.

2017 IMA: HELP: HG: OS 0.9.x may be close to release. It won't automatically mess up your mesh

2017  IMA:  HELP: HG: OS 0.9.x may near release.
It won't automatically mess up your mesh
A summary of the information I have gathered from discussions about the effect of ubODE on mesh objects, with excerpts from the original sources.
    • Yes, ubODE may "break" a lot of mesh objects.
    • But the default physics engine for 0.9.x is BulletSim.
    • The ubODE engine is optional.  If you are concerned about mesh, don't use it.
    • The concrete meaning of breaking mesh is either:
    • Objects that need act like solids (floors and walls) are phantom.
    • OR: Objects that are supposed to be solid get an invisible hull around them.
    • Technically the hull is called a convex hull, but it is like the hull of a pecan.
    • You can't walk through doors or may walk well above the visible surface.
    • If your mesh objects are okay phantom, you won't care.
    • Kitely will probably convert any problem object to phantom.
    • Some other grids may do that too.
    • The real problem is that the mesh objects were incorrectly uploaded.
