A serious game
- Learning the nomenclature. That's learning the names of things.
- The vocabulary of a foreign language.
- The correct names for the specialized objects in any technical field.
- These usually have to be overlearned so that accurate recall is no effort.
- Treasure hunts can provide serious games to practice that vocabulary skill.
- They can also provide formative assessment indicating level of achievement.
- Inquiry-based learning

- To introduce a social element, form teams with a team assignment,

The quest model
A quest is a journey toward a specific mission or a goal. The word serves as a plot device in mythology and fiction: a difficult journey towards a goal, often symbolic or allegorical. Tales of quests figure prominently in the folklore of every nation[1] and ethnic culture. In literature, the object of a quest requires great exertion on the part of the hero, who must overcome many obstacles, typically including much travel. (Wikipedia)
- Monomyth: Hero's Journey
- Education is a quest, though that may not be apparent to some of the participants
- The hero must overcome many obstacles.
- There is a mentor providing some guidance.
Education is always a quest
- The hero is the learner
- The mission is the learning objective.
- I don't have to tell you about the obstacles
- The mentor may be the teacher or (for teens and adults) the educational resources.
Gamification, score-keeping and display
- Any game is a quest

Project-based learning
- Every project is a quest and every quest is a project.
- Some projects can be managed by a scripted Digital Teaching Assistant (DTA).
- Projects calling for research and teamwork are well suited for a scripted DTA
Learning principles
- Psychology of learning
- Learning is developing skills.
- For much of formal education, the target skill is demonstrating "knowledge"
To develop a learning quest
- Analyze the learning objective(s) into specific skills
- Don't be misled by objectives that say what the student must know.
- Consider how that knowledge will be assessed.
- Knowledge is assessed by having the student perform tasks that are believed to require that knowledge,
- Often the tasks are simply answering questions.
- But in a virtual world, those tasks can involve virtual objects and virtual places.
- If the answers are multiple choice or short answer, a DTA can score them and give feedback.
- If the answers involve virtual objects or virtual places, a DTA can probably score them and give feedback.
