2019 EDU: Why I specifically recommend Kitely for hosting a virtual campus (MUVE)

Why I specifically recommend Kitely
for hosting a virtual campus (MUVE)
A teacher has a classroom.  A school has a campus.  A school has needs that teachers don't have to think about, because the school takes care of them.  Kitely's new Organization service supports the needs of schools better than any other MUVE provider that I know of.
Universal campus
for OpenSim

Organizations (virtual grids) provided by Kitely

  • Branded and managed by the school.
  • School controls registration.
  • School controls the login page.
  • School uses Batch registration.
  • School manages access.
  • The school owns (and can sell) the contents it builds.
  • The school runs the campus.  Kitely runs the tech.

2019 EVENTS: BIZ: WW: Live performances on a web venue: chat with the fan group, chat with the performer

Live performances on a web venue:
chat with the fan group,
chat with the performer
You can come to live performances in your browser.  Here is how.

A venue on the web

  • 3DWebWorldz
  • A performer can stream video on the web.
  • web-venue can host multiple performers.
  • A web-venue can host fan clubs.
  • A web-venue can host informal gatherings.
  • A web-venue can aggregate performers.
  • Aggregate performers and you aggregate audience.
  • If you have a good audience, you can sell ads.
  • You can even sell commercial time.
  • You could certainly sell music tracks.
  • Or give them away as promotion.

2019 EDU: WW: The online campus: Your campus on the internet. Meet fellow students, work with them

The online campus:
Your  campus
on the internet

This campus travels the world.  It can teach in any language its owner wants.  It is open any time students want to meet there.  It can meet students in their own homes. The elaborate version requires installing an app.  The simple version lives in a browser (Chrome, for example).
Universal campus (Kitely)

A campus is more than classes

  • A campus is not just a place where you go to study.
  • You meet fellow students, you work with them, you learn from them.
  • You develop contacts you may work with in your later career.
  • You can take online classes by yourself.
  • Can you talk with anyone about what you are learning?
  • In the old-style school, you could talk with classmates.
  • You could ask them questions, answer questions, study together.
  • Can you do that in an online class?
  • Maybe not, but you can do it in a virtual campus

What is a virtual campus?

  • A virtual campus is a 3D representation of a college campus.
  • Students attend via the internet, but it goes beyond online courses.
  • Students don't have to learn by themselves.
  • They come to classes with other students.
  • There are commons rooms for students to meet out of class.
  • Students can organize their own clubs, hold their own events.
  • They can hold study sessions with other students as they wish.
  • They can form fraternities and sororities if the school allows it.
  • A virtual campus is more than online classes.

2019 EDU: BIZ: Presenting in a virtual world (MUVE). Use the web, use the environment

Preparing a presentation for a virtual world (MUVE).
This is the internet--use the web
How you can use the affordances of MUVEs (virtual worlds) to make a presentation that is both informative and efficient: blog, web, video, and animated diorama.
Waterstage
  • Pleasant virtual weather allows outdoor presentations.
  • A virtual auditorium looks much like the ones we are used to.
  • For a conference, Kitely Organizations would work well.
  • You can use the web to organize and amplify your content.
  • You can change the environment to suit your topic.
  • You can present 3D scenes instead of pictures on slides.
  • A 3d scene is a diorama, such as you see in a museum.
  • You can bring a museum to your presentation.
  • But there is no glass to keep people from getting too close.
  • You can even create the scene while you talk about it.
  • And your audience can walk around in the scene while you speak.

2019 EDU: GAME: Rockville: Life on the Margin, an experience roleplay game

Life on the Margin,
an experience roleplay game

A different kind of learning: A roleplay game in a virtual world.  Not for entertainment but for experience.

 Rockville role-play
starts here
  • Social experience is real.
  • Textbooks can write about it in the abstract.
  • Lecturers can talk about it in the abstract.
  • Students can get an intellectual understanding from that.
  • They can get a view as detached observers.
  • Will they understand things the way the participants do?
  • Not likely--they are not the participants.
  • They can't be the participants.  But they can role-play as participants.
  • That may give them better insight into the world as the participants see it.
  • Scholarly articles on Learning through role-playing

Moving a Decision-Making Game from the classroom to Second Life.

This session introduces Rockville, a role playing game used in ethics education of teachers and other educators. Session participants will learn about the purpose, aims, and flow of the game and then, participate in a walk through the game environment in Second Life.

2019 PROMO: Now that G+ is going, let's rethink event-promotion for the Hypergrid

Now that G+ is going,
let's rethink event-promotion
for the Hypergrid
Summary of options for promoting events on the Hypergrid
Top of HYPEvents page
  • The legacy model: events are all over the place.
  • People join groups to hear about upcoming events.
  • Event managers send group notices to invite and alert people to the event.
  • Performers have fan groups that get notices on performances.
  • That would only work for people inworld in a single large grid.
  • Hypergrid, the multi-grid metaverse, needs a grid-independent system.
  • That means using outworld media (mostly social media).

2019 PROMO: MUVE event promotion on Mewe

MUVE event promotion on Mewe

Review of some of the services offered by MeWe for promoting and following events.
My calendar on MeWe

Example of my MeWe calendar

  • Many OpenSimmers are shifting to MeWe.
  • So it may be practical to promote OpenSim events on MeWe
  • I have a calendar with events I set up and those for which I accepted invitations.
  • I could use that calendar to keep track of events I want to go to.
  • I can set a reminder that I will get if MeWe is open in a browser tab
  • I can invite my friends on MeWe to an event.
  • I can send notices to Facebook and Twitter.
  • I can put a link to an event in my blog.
  • If you are not a MEWe member, you may just get an invitation to join MeWe.
  • Link to My MeWe calendar.

Instruction and practice in Symbolic Modeling are offered by Marly Milena in the virtual world (MUVE) of Second Life.

Theory background for SymMod

Lateral thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. The term was (coined) in 1967 by Edward de Bono.

People seem to fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels, but which one are you?! 2019 EDU: What would I want in a MUVE if I were using it to teach a class?

What would I want in a MUVE
if I were using it to teach a class?
MultiUser Virtual Environments (MUVEs) are widely available now and are in use for online instruction.  Here I view the use of MUVEs from the standpoint of a retired university professor.
The Empty Classroom

  • I taught college and graduate level classes for 25 years.
  • So I have some experience to know what an instructor needs.

Would I use a MUVE to teach a class?

  • I would be concerned about how I could evaluate performance.
  • Here I assume that evaluation for credit is not done in the MUVE.
  • But otherwise I would be happy to use a MUVE.
  • Indeed, I would see online experience as necessary student preparation now.
  • Online learning includes learning how to use the internet for finding out things.
  • (Instructors translate finding out things to doing research.)
  • You need to learn how to find out things if you didn't learn everything in school.
  • Becoming able to find out things is called learning how to learn.

MUVE: EVENT: OpenSim Fest with some new tricks

OpenSim Fest with some new tricks

New things I found at OpenSim Fest 2019.  AvatarFest has been a creative effort which has celebrated the people of Open Sim for years, and AvatarFest 2018 was it's final year. In the spirit of this incredible yearly festival, OpenSim Fest begins with our first festival starting in March 2019.

Opensim Fest Rises in March 2019.

OpenSim Fest Weekend and beyond

"There are two parts to the festival; the first is the weekend of live performances on the Opensim Fest grid on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of March 2019. and second. you will be able to visit the region via the hypergrid to see the exhibits until the 6th April 2019. Nearer the time of the festival a full schedule will be posted and pages will be posted to the site with a full list of performers and exhibitors.
