2019 #VWEDU BIZ: The Online Campus needs a library, as did those old campuses with the expensive buildings

#VWEDU The Online Campus needs a library,
as did those old campuses
with the expensive buildings

We now have MUVE campuses.  We should think about what we need there.    Libraries are an obvious need, so I start with the probable functions of an online library associated with an online college.

The online library is all service

  • Online we can do without those expensive buildings.
  • The ones you had to drive to and then look for a parking place.
  • The money that went for building maintenance can now support services
  • Yes, we need the services more than ever:
  • Digital citizenship. Safe and effective use of the web and the internet.
  • Curation and exhibition are services an online campus must have.
  • Host professionally relevant student groups.
  • Host professional learning communities
  • Professional learning community (PLC) (Wikipedia)
  • Subscribe to appropriate journals to give students and faculty access.
  • Support student access to needed and suitable books or other materials
  • Coach students on how to seek, find, and evaluate suitable information.
  • Provide instruction on living online.

2019 WW: MESH: Full physics comes to CybaLOUNGE: How to make objects solid

Full physics comes to CybaLOUNGE:.
How to make objects solid

Imitates real physics: gravity and friction.  Makes objects act like solids.  You can set the mass of an object.

Physics comes to Cybalounge

  • CybaLOUNGE
  • https://nonprofitvirtualworld.org/
  • You can set objects to collision--that makes objects act as if solid.
  • We usually call objects physical when they are set to act as if solid.
  • (We people of the digital worlds)
  • You can walk on physical objects and bump into them.
  • You can turn on gravity in your place and set it to the level you want.
  • You can set gravity to much less than earth level and make things fall slowly.
  • Instructions after the break.

2019 EDU: Presentation paradigm for the internet generation

Presentation paradigm for
the internet generation

Virtual worlds allow a presentation that is just like the old way of doing presentations.  But they also allow newer, more efficient methods.  Here are some suggestions to take advantage of the affordances of the internet.

An old-fashioned presentation
  • Think up bullet points that show the main ideas you want to get across.
  • Put the bullet points up on a screen.
  • Talk about each point.  Answer questions about each point.
  • Hope they remember what you said, because they can't go back and reread.
  • Notice that they all have laptops.
  • Couldn't the presentation make use of the laptops?

Could the presentation use the laptops?

  • Make a web page for each bullet point.
  • Put relevant links and information on that web page.
  • Give the web page links to the audience so they can follow.
  • Better yet, give  the links in advance so people can prepare in advance.
  • Bur don't stop there.

2019 TKR How to to stop worrying and learn to appreciate ageism

How to to stop worrying
and learn to appreciate ageism
A lady who is getting old sets the record straight on ageism and the myths of the old folks home in a rapid fire talk that few young people could match.

  Watch on YouTube
A World Without Ageism with author and activist Ashton Applewhite. What would age equality look like? We’re barraged by messages that encourage a fear of old age. Many of us assume that with older age comes poor health and failing capabilities, so much so that the increase in life expectancy is often viewed as a negative trend. Ageing, however, is a natural, lifelong, powerful process, and, in fact, the older people get, the less afraid they are of dying. So why all the negativity? Ashton Applewhite uncovers the roots of ageism and shows how ageist myths and stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function.

2019 EDU: GAME: VWBPE immersive events, The Queen’s Heroes in the Five Kingdoms #vwbpe19chat

    VWBPE immersive events,
The Queen’s Heroes in the Five Kingdoms

An illustrative educational game is offered at the VWBPE exposition site.  The game shows how the standard hero quest model can be used as the basis for an instructional game.  #vwbpe19chat
    Starting point of the
    Queen's Heroes game
Host: Leticia De Leon (SL: Letty Luckstone), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Description: Participants in this immersive experience will engage in an allegorical experience that is both storytelling and game. This underwater paradise needs heroes that will save the five kingdoms from a man-made destruction. Guided by a HUD and a mentor, all heroes who heed the call will travel to the five underwater kingdoms to piece together the story and undergirding real life issues. Those who engage with this experience may do so in storytelling or game mode.

Participants will be the heroes in an allegory that follows an underwater path to the five kingdoms.

Participants will evaluate environmental issues in a five-kingdom challenge to win the game.

2019 EDU: HG: WW: Teachers don't need to learn how to build in virtual worlds to teach there

    Teachers don't need to learn
how to build in virtual worlds
    to teach there
Virtual Worlds offer great potential for modern instruction at most levels.  But a shift to virtual world instruction could look difficult to present-day teachers.  Here I offer a suggestions on how that difficulty can be minimized.
