What do you want your display name to say about you?
-
Maybe you don't care. But if you are interested in meeting people, you want to consider that your name will probably be the first thing experienced people see about you. People who have been in Second Life for a while often use some way to scan around and see names and other information about people nearby. Here is a method you have if you are using the standard Second Life viewer:
-
Who is near me?
-
I visit some of the newcomer hangouts and look for newcomers who might want help. The name they show is one clue: new people start with a single name. So I know that people who have two names have been in Second Life long enough to edit the profile and put in a display name. Of course, I also check the info button to see how long they have been in Second Life.
-
I see a lot of names in my journeys and have seen some good ideas that people are using to tell about themselves. What do you make of these examples?
-
So if you have some special interest that you would like to pursue in Second Life, you might want to think about how your name could help you find other people with similar interests.
======================================
Names for marketingI see some names that include a store, private continent, or entertainment venue. I think some new people earn a few Lindens by wearing these names for a while. Probably while carrying a notecard with promo to give out to anyone who asks.

You can change your display name once a week if you want to. But keep in mind that if you change your display name, your friends may not recognize you. And over time, you may want people to recognize you.

I have a lot of things going on both inworld and outworld, and I want those things connected. So I keep a display name that tells who I am in both places: ThinkererSelbyEvans Melville. Since I am Selby Evans in Facebook and on this blog, people that I know in Second Life can recognise me in both places.
