There is a lot more to do than you realize.  Here is a checklist of things you need to deal with.

Venue

You need a place and some control over the parcel you will use.  You can often rent or get free use of a venue.  You cam seek free use by posting in the Second Life forums.

Group

An event generally requires that several people certain powers on the land.

You and anyone else who will be rezzing components of the set must have rez power in the land unless the land has a long enough autoreturn time so the the objects will not be returned before show is over.  Usually you will need to bring some of  your people in the the group that manages the land and give them rezz authority in thegroup.
