2018 PEOPLE: A collaborative blog is social media if you use it that way

A collaborative blog is social media
if you use it that way
Updated 12/262018
Collaborative blogs could replace some of the functions of G+ and do a better job of it.
Old fashioned collaboration

A collaborative blog

  • Has one owner and multiple contributors.
  • Contributors may act as authors, editors, and promoters
  • Editors bring in guest articles from their contacts.
  • Promoters repost articles on other social media outlets.

Advantages of a blog

  • Persistent and searchable.
  • Can carry post buttons for Facebook, and other social media.
  • Keeps the focus on a topic of interest.
  • You can let anyone leave comments on an article.
  • You can collect comments on a specific topic and post them in a new article

Advantages of a collaborative blog

  • More frequent publication gets more views.
  • Multiple contributors promote more widely.
  • Multiple contributors give a better representation of the community.
  • Multiple contributors give wider coverage.
  • Multiple contributors ensure continuity.

Blogging

Build a blog

Make a blog useful and interesting

Promote your blog on social media

  • Post a notice of each article on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter
  • A blog should automatically carry share buttons for Twitter and Facebook
  • Blogger blogs offer the share options upper left under More
  • In Facebook, share in appropriate groups.
  • In LinkedIn, share in appropriate categories.
  • Do not scatter-spam.

Promote search on your blog

Put an explicit license statement on the blog

Join a cross-promotion network: Blogroll

  • Put a blogroll on your blog.
  • This blog carries a blogroll in the right-hand column (scroll down).
  • This blogroll links to 137 other blogs; some of them link back to this blog.
  • The linked blogs relate to topics appearing in this blog.
  • If I know about a blog appropriate for my blogroll, I will add it.
  • The 25 most recent posts are listed; the posts stay up for about a week.
  • The blogs posting most frequently get the most exposure.

Managing the reiterations

  • This blog carries two blocks of text that are repeated on every post.
  • The contents change from time to time, but not daily.
  • They carry links that some people may want some (unpredictable) day.
  • I keep them with my drafts and copy/paste them into articles ready to post.
