Learning the vocabulary with  gamification and AI.
Intelligent environment for routine instruction.
Gamification

The intelligent scene (DTA) can manage an instructional game.  Here such a game is described as teaching vocabulary for learning a second language.  This article is explicitly licensed Public Domain (CC0).

2013 1stHELP: Linden realms. Starting Second Life as a game.

"How do you play this game?"
An answer at last.  Along with just-in-time learning.

Portal to Linden Realms
A call for help
-
Many people come into Second Life expecting a game.  Actually, there are a lot of games.  The  Destination Guide lists about 37 in its Games section.  But now Linden Lab has developed a new game, specifically for new people.
-
Not just to entertain new people.  To create a learning environment for building the skills that are important for enjoying Second Life.

Tips
Skills to be developed
Move
  • Double-click on the place you want to go (on the ground or on the map).
  • Walk: press the up arrow key.
  • Run: Press Ctrl r.
  • Turn: press the arrow key pointing in the turn direction
  • SitRight click on  the object., select sit.  Note Stand up button
  • Map: Open, locate places, double click to go. Map button (folded paper)
Look around
You can look around without moving.  I call that "zoom and roam your camera."  Here's how:
  • Put your cursor on what you want in the center of the picture.
  • Press Alt and hold it down. The cursor will change to a rectangle with a plus sign in it.
  • Scroll back and forth with the mouse scroll wheel;
  • Press each of the arrow keys you normally use to move;
  • Press page up and page down.
  • Learn from what happens when you make these moves
  • Press Esc to return to normal camera view
  • See See, Zoom, roam, and tag
Design goals (my guess)
  • Beginner level
  • Teach as well as play
  • Incremental quests
  • Play "at your pleasure"
  • Play alone or with friends
Just-in-time learning and gamification
-
Just-in-time instructional design:
  • Offer just what the learner needs to know,
  • just when the learner needs to know it.
The gamification maneuver:
  • Use the game to create a need point for each learning objective.
  • Then you know when to supply the instruction.
Illustration:  the gamification maneuver in Linden Realms
  • The quest is to collect crystals from a dangerous valley
  • The "Look around" method (above) lets you search in safety.
  •  JIT learning would mention "Look around" right at this point.

  • You can talk about what you have been taught.
  • You can do things with what you understand.

2020 #VWEDU: #DTA: Microcredentials for the teachers, badges for the kids, guild ranks for the teens. All learning is microlearning, whether educators use it or not.

Microcredentials for the teachers,
badges for the kids, guild ranks for the teens.
All learning is microlearning,
whether educators use it or not.
Learning requires focus.  Focus needs a goal.  Progress is one step at a time.  Badges mark the steps.  Teachers don't have time to manage all those badges.  Computers do have the time.

2020 #VWEDU: #DTA: The learning game and the conquest of the Lims.. The generic education game. What can the Digital Teaching Assistant manage?

The learning game and the conquest of the Lims..
The generic education game.
What can the Digital Teaching Assistant (DTA) manage?

The case for the education game.  Why education is already a game, though many educators are reluctant to accept the view. And how the fully managed environment of the digital world can support gamification. This article is explicitly licensed Public Domain (CC0).

People like games
  • Why do so few like education?
  • They don't see it as a game.
  • The education system does not present it as a game.
  • Some are trying:
  • Gamification in education (search)

The generic education game

  • The student is in perpetual conflict with the Lims (limitations).
  • The Lims hold territory in Skilland that the student wants to rule over.
  • Some territories, such as the skill set of driving a car, the student wants to use.
  • Other territories, such as the skill set of doing math, the student is told to want.
  • For children the teling is by the educational system: Courses they have to pass.
  • They must get the skills to  to win the game and get out of school:  Student thinking.
  • Adolescents and young adults will (we hope) transition to breadwinner thinking.
  • Either view favors growth mindset.
  • Breadwinner thinking goes beyond passing courses to using the skill.
  • The education game is a serious game.

After the break

  • How is education a game?
  • Why view education as a game?

2013 GAMES: MadPea: Lennon Park Massacre. Sept.1-30, 2013

MadPea: Lennon Park Massacre.
Sept.1-30, 2013
-
-
"12 teens and 3 camp counselors were found dead in a tragic school bus fire 1 year ago. The bus had just left a summer camp at Lennon Park. A single teen survivor, Madison Walkner, was able to escape the flames and call 911. The bad publicity closed Lennon Park and the abandoned camp was never investigated, until now."

2019 #VWEDU: #DTA: Digicoach can support homework in virtual worlds with JIT learning, immediate feedback

Digicoach can support homework
in virtual worlds with JIT learning,
immediate feedback
Updated 10/19/2019

Consideration of how MUVEs with Digicoach could support Just-in-Time learning by creating conditions that require the learner to use the new learning to win in a game.  This article is explicitly licensed Public Domain (CC0).
The Empty Classroom
Doing homework
  • Is the homework effectively inducing learning in the student?
  • The teacher can answer that with quizzes in class.
  • But online homework can give its own quizzes.
  • Quizzes can be given in any kind of online homework.
  • MUVES are well suited to tasks that let students show what they are learning.
  • An educational game creates challenges that demand use of the learning.
  • A scripted MUVE can evaluate at the time of learning.
  • It can provide immediate feedback to the student.
  • Immediate feedback in the classroom

2017 EDU: NEW: Online libraries as centers for adult instruction. Self-managed learning.

Online libraries as centers for adult instruction.
Self-managed learning in virtual worlds
Self-managed instruction and the internet are a natural fit.  Add in the need for life-long learning and we have the timely trio.  A natural for online libraries.  But self managed often means solitary.  Or it used to mean that.  Web-worlds let you confer with people on your browser.

What can virtual libraries do for self-managed learning?

  • Provide evaluated content.
  • Provide lesson plans designed for self-managed learning (SML).
  • Help learners choose the best instructional method for them.
  • Provide course plans designed for SML.
  • Provide links to environments that support their best learning method.
  • Provide links to instruction  in learning-how-to-learn.

The concept of embarking on a quest-a journey of self-discovery - is a vital part of education. In this innovative approach to experiential learning, participants delve into, interact with, and co-create stories using the immersive tools inherent in Second Life and the groundbreaking Story Quest model developed by TVWSP: "The Life and Times and Uncle D."
Gamification; new term invented to describe the application of game mechanics such as points, badges, and levels to non-game processes.
