2017 IMA: BIZ: Essential roles in a self-managed working group (team)

Essential roles in a self-managed working group (team)
Updated 6/5/2017
A quick summary of what team members need to do in a self-managed working group to help it function effectively and efficiently.

Everyone:

  • Takes responsibility for helping the team make progress.
  • Shares the team goal.
  • Helps to plan the path that gets the team to that goal.
  • Notices communication problems and acts to resolve them.
  • Pays attention to what the team needs for effective functioning "right now."
  • Tries to supply the immediate need immediately.
  • Points out needed action items.
  • Takes action items when possible.
  • Helps with action items when possible.
  • Keeps track of pending action items.
  • Keeps focused on the goal and shares that focus with the team.

Quotes

  • Everybody's job is nobody's job.
  • The secret to getting there is to know where you're going.
  • A problem is just an opportunity to see what you can do.
  • The gate to discovery opens if you ask the right question.
  • You can get more practice in complaining than you can with fixing.
  • If you are perfect on the first try, you have nowhere to go but down.
  • If you are not learning new things, you already know all you will ever know.

2017 OSHG: PEOPLE: How many avatars can we get into a meeting?

How many avatars can we get into a meeting?
A consideration of why we may want to have large numbers of avatars in a single place.   A consideration of likely use-cases suggested some workable alternatives for most use cases.  Suggested arrangements are offered for the rare cases that have no alternative.
  • That is the wrong question to start with.
  • In my consulting days, I would have responded, "What is your objective?"
  • The answer will probably be "I want to have a lot of people at a virtual meeting."
  • Why?  What do you want to happen at that meeting?
  • What can you do with a lot of people but have them witness a presentation?

2017 OSHG: Web-worlds in your browser: Visitor's guide

Web-worlds in your browser: Visitor's guide
As the web-worlds multiply, the people of the established virtual worlds are getting more interested in the developments and how they could be used.  Here is a summary of the current status and some information on using existing worlds.
    Web-world for nonprofits
    and public service organizations

    -

    • I host a meeting in this world every day at 10-10:30 am Pacific Coast  (US) time.
    • I expect to be there almost every day.  Others will probably be there also.
    • If there are people there, we will probably stay past 10:30.
    • We will talk in voice and anyone is welcome to drop in.
    • No registration is required -- just pick an avatar,
    • give the name you want use, and click enter.
    • If you don't see the enter button at the bottom of your screen,
    • go to full screen or shrink the size of your display.
    • To shrink the display in Chrome:
    • click the column of dots, upper right, and use the zoom controls.

2017 EDU: A visit to ancient Rome

    A visit to ancient Rome
A short video of some aspects of ancient Rome as presented by Ferd Frederix in Outworldz, with some suggestions on how to use it in instruction.

    Go there

    • Outworldz: the grid cannot be reached from the web.
    • You go to any OpenSim grid on the Hypergrid (HG) and take the HG from there.

    • HG Address Outwordz Welcome Center:
    • or
    • www.outworldz.com:9000
    • Put the HG address in the Find bar of your world map. Click Find, TP
    • At the Welcome Center, find the wall poster for the Egypt and Rome, and click for TP
    • DO NOT use the world map to go there.
    • Note: Some people have run into problems in getting to Outworldz grid.
    • If you can't get there, try from another location or try another day.
    • Outwolrdz has the kind of IP address that changes from time to time.
    • If the grid you are using has not gotten the update, it won't find Outwordz.
    • Maybe it will get undated in a day or so.

      The YesButters will complain

      • Yes but you can't use it in education.  It has historical inaccuracies
      • See the response of the smart teacher after the break.

2017 OSHG: Road map to joining web-worlds to OpenSim

Road map to joining web-worlds to OpenSim
A road map tells you how you will get from where you are to where you want to go, noting the main intermediate milestones.  (A road map is not a timeline.) Here I note the major events I expect we will see along the way.

2017 WRITE: PEOPLE: Jane, Plain Jane: Part 8 I can believe it!

Jane, Plain Jane: Part 8 I can believe it!
The writers group at Nara's Nook has started a learning and production project using the guide book  "The 90-day novel," by Alan Watt.  To contribute to the project without spending the time on a novel, I am writing a short story or small play using some of the guidance from the book.

2017 OSHG: IMA Proposed Working Group: Test Management

IMA Proposed Working Group: Test Management
            Updated 5/26/2017
A proposal is given for a work group to design and implement a test capability to support the development and selection of open sim and related code.  An example of probable output is given, along with a generalized road map for operating a WG with IMA support.

            WG: Test management

            • Objective: support development of open source software for user-built virtual worlds.
            • Need: testing needed to characterize bugs, evaluate alternatives, and validate betas.
            • Who: The OpenSim community can do this.  (We, the users.)
            • Rationale: We need not and should not put the burden on the developers.
            • Support: IMA will undertake to organize and support an OpenSim Working Group for test management.
            • Lead: Selby Evans will undertake initial organization of this WG.
            • Selby hopes to turn the lead over so someone more capable in the future.
Objective: To design and implement a test capability to support the development and selection of open sim and related code.

            Expected output (deliverables)
            • A document giving the categories of tests required for the cited development
            • Road-maps showing how to execute tests in each category
            • Approval of these items by developers and other users of the test results
            • Formation of a self-maintaining tester team intended to continue indefinitely.
            • Output may change by decisions of the WG

            Comment

The initial impetus for this WG came from a discussion in the Dev Q&A meeting about the task of testing fixes for the problems we have we have with permissions.  Some fixes have already been done, but testing them is a big problem with many parameters forming a large combinatorial set.  The discussion disclosed a method for distributing the test burden over a large group of volunteers.  The function of the Test WG is to develop and implement a detailed plan for doing that.
            -
Since this test plan can be generalized to other testing needs, the WG can and should present a generalized test procedure that can be used with any scriptable testing.

2017 OSHG: Nonprofit web-world up and running. How do I put my project there?

            Nonprofit web-world up and running.
How will we put projects there?
Explanation of current plans to bring nonprofit orgs into the web-world and let them provide content relevant to their mission.  The plan is to let each org build its own site with tools provided by Cybalounge.
            Web-world for nonprofits
            and public service organizations
            • The current plan is that each public service organization will have its own site.
            • Sites will be accessed though the Welcome site.
            • Welcome site with six visitors is shown above.
            • I host a meeting there almost every day at 10 am California time.
            • I usually have several visitors.
            • Future plan:
            • Visitor enters, sees a list of available sites, clicks on choice, goes there.
            • We hope to have a person at Welcome site much of the time.
            • We also hope to have hosts at the individual service sites part of the time.
            • Each service site will be built by the organization using it.
            • Cybalounge has the needed tools and instructions for building web-worlds.

            Drop by and let's talk
