A proposal for a web-world to support
nonprofits in virtual worlds
nonprofits in virtual worlds
Nonprofit Commons is developing a plan to put a web-world on a web page at its website. Here is a preliminary plan for developing the web-world
Web-world
- A small virtual world that can be embedded in a web page
- And can be entered from there.
- Example: Cybalounge updated: now with voice!
- No download, no install. Choose an avatar, type a name, enter.
- Supports voice, audio stream, webpage display, avatars, furniture.
- Resources for inworld builds are limited; best use voice and web-links.
- Web-worlds can be as secure as any other browser communication,
- though the initial versions may not meet strong security requirements.
- Summary of the HIPAA Security Rule
The plan
- Nonprofit Commons will have a web-world on its web page.
- The web-world will be available for use by all interested organizations.
- Provided they are nonprofit or non-commercial.
- The objective is to have people there to welcome people.
- It will attract more attention if it has people and action most of the time.
- This is a draft plan. It will change. We will be smarter next month.
-
- Cybalounge will create and maintain a single web-world:
- To host events for nonprofits and other non-commercial activities.
- Cybalounge will provide embedding code to put the world on web sites.
- Embedding a world is much like embedding a video.
- Initially, visitors only select an avatar and enter the name they want to use.
- Some restrictions may be needed to control griefers.
Offering the web-world on the web
- Nonprofit Commons will embed the web-world in its web page
- The embed code may be offered to participating organizations for their web sites.
- Participants will propose times when they will sponsor events at the web-world.
- Events may be conferences in voice among members of the organization.
- Or events may be more elaborate if permitted by available support.
- The sole requirement for an events is that someone be in the web-world.
- The event schedule will be on the web-world page and promoted elsewhere.
- The page with the web-world could also embed videos and streaming video.
Costs
- The project will be free to participants.
- Selby Evans will cover any reasonable costs.
Features needed beyond basics
- Sit scripts
- Web page displays (url selectable)
- Web place opener, opens new page (url selectable)
- Audio-music stream (source selectable)
- Selectable means that participants can select at any time.
- Participants are people in charge of running the web-world.
- Visitors are people who just drop in.
- We also need a way to notify participants that they have a visitor.
Participant powers: set the scene, control griefers
- Set url for web-page displays.
- Set url for a web -page opener.
- Set the audio-music stream.
- Identify each visitor's sound input.
- Adjust the sound volume for each visitor.
- Set the sound volume for a visitor to zero.
- Remove and ban (by IP address) any selected visitor.
Suggested details for the set
- The web-world set is much like a stage setting:
- Designed for the effect we want to produce with minimum resources.
- Effect: Friendly, welcoming living room with plenty of space for more people.
- The basic set will be arm chairs with sit scripts in a simple outdoors setting.
- The chairs will be arranged roughly in a circle, as for a casual meeting.
- A few web-page displays will be around.
- The entry point will be near the chair circle with a sign facing entry point:
- "Welcome: Come in and talk with us."
Communication beyond talk (TBD)
- Evaluate and select the best ways to handle text conversations.
- Separate Iframe?
- Group conversations (stored for recovery)
- Private IMs (stored for recovery)
- File transfer
"Yes, but I have a much better world.."
- Of course. We all know that. The people of the flat web don't know that.
- And the flat-webbers have never downloaded and installed a viewer.
- They know how to install an app.
- Firestorm has recently made the download-install process more like an app install.
- We know that a viewer is easy to install.
- And it takes little space on the hard drives we got.
- Most important: We know why we want a viewer.
- The flat-webbers don't know any of that.
- With all our smarts, of course we're smart enough to reach out to the flat-web.
- We can meet the flat-webber in the only world they know.
- We can poke a hole in that flat web and show them our real virtual worlds.
- "We can't show you much in this cramped browser space,
- but there are other worlds beyond. We can show you the way."
- And right on that same page, we can show videos of us using those worlds.
- We will give them a reason to do that download, install, register act.
- We will even talk them through the job if they need help.
- That gets them into that better world you have.
