Zero height creates a puddle
- The green blob is under the water.
- To change the height again, toggle water.
Water off shows the green blob
- Click the green blob to change the height.
- Toggle water back on again.
Terrain changers
- Toggle Water: Switches the water on or off.
- Random Terrain: Surrounded by a circular hill/mountain range of random height.
- Even Terrain: Creates a terrain of even height.
- Create Island: Creates a circular island surrounded by water.
Grid Lines (on selected object)
When an object is selected, it is marked by a grey, translucent box. If you select None, that's all you see. If you select Lines, you also see lines marking it's position on the grid dimensions. If you select Grid, you see a translucent grid. (I normally use the Lines setting.)Adjust Terrain
Changes the height of all points simultaneously by the given value. Caution: Rezzed objects will not rise, so they may be left under the terrain.Flat (simple) terrain
Checking this box make the land flat. No hills, valleys, or water. You might choose this option
- If you want to have faster rendering.
- If your world will be mainly indoors.
- If you want to use terrain texturing (terrain mapping).
You can select/change the texture for the whole terrain. This will only work for flat terrains or if shadowing is activated for the current scene (see location settings). As a practical matter, shadowing is too heavy a resource load for general use, so flat terrain is the main thing to consider.
-
To select the texture for your terrain, click the white text bar next to Terrain Map and select from the drop-down list. The list will include, at the bottom, textures you have uploaded. Click the texture you want and press return. If you don't see an immediate change, refresh the world (circling arrow, upper left).

Horizon (Skyboxes)
The view on the horizon is created by texture. The current default is a pair of textures representing day and night, cycling accord to UTC time. This feature is under revision and this section will be updated later.
-
The day/night cycle may be of little use in a global web. And a virtual world has little reason to imitate the "real" world. People would probably prefer to upload their own horizon textures. Some will certainly prefer to have off-world images such as the double sunset of the first Star Wars. My suggestion:

Some will certainly prefer to have off-world images such as the double sunset of the first Star Wars. My suggestion:
- Create a class of assets called Horizons and let people upload textures to it.
- Let people chose a Horizon in the Locations panel.
- If convenient, let people cycle through the Horizons with a change every (user set parameter).
- It would be good if the textures could include GIFs-- people could have distant lightning and other animations.
