2017 PEOPLE: WRITE: IMA: EDU: WW: The web show: a magazine from the virtual worlds

The web show: a magazine from the virtual worlds
Plan for developing a magazine show about the people of the Web.  Objectives, concept, content, sources, initial publication, call for editors and contributors.
Set for a talk show in Cybalounge
The name will change

Objectives

  • Promote virtual worlds to people who have not found out about them yet.
  • Promote web-worlds to ad agencies as a marketing tool they may want to offer.

What is it?

  • Concept for a magazine (a collection of videos) about virtual worlds.
  • Theme: Living on the web: what people do on the web.
  • Content:  Mostly short videos (3 to 5 minutes) done in virtual worlds (or web-worlds).
  • Subjects: Activities of people using virtual worlds for common activities.
  • Common: activities in the physical world, thus of interest to web readers.
  • Publication: Initially on my blog.   It will move elsewhere when it can sell ads.
  • (The license on my blog encourages redistribution.)
  • Managing editor: initially Selby Evans (that is I).
  • I will give all rights to anyone I think will develop the magazine.

Target market

The target market would be people with creative and technical interests, whether they know about virtual worlds yet or not.  Specific subgroups would be:
  • Ad agencies
  • Educators
  • Writers (especially multimedia writers)
  • Comedians
  • Theatrical groups
  • Game developers
  • Public service organizations
  • Others (TBD)

Potential ad sources

Our advantage

  • Direct presence on the web in the form of web-worlds.
  • These are accessible to almost anyone using a browser.
  • They run on a cheap laptop, a Chromebook, an iPad, and a tablet.
  • We presently can use two web-worlds:
  • Cybalounge (multiple worlds--you can build your place in this world)
  • IMA web-world (you can make presentations in this world)
  • In both of these worlds, we can talk and capture video.
  • Who is we?  Anyone who clicks on one of the links above.
  • Give it a little time to load the world.
  • Bring a friend and try out a meeting.
  • Come to Cybalounge at noon central time (US) on a weekday (my office 1/2-hour)
  • I will probably be there and can show you around.
  • How will we use this advantage?  Ideas developing: see some in a later section.

Content sources

  • Broadly, groups that have something to promote on the web.
  • Educator and writer communities
  • Inworld comedians and theatrical groups
  • Commercial grids (promoting their offerings and those of customers)
  • Interest communities (seeking more members)
  • Public service communities (promoting their services)
  • Event producers (promoting their events)
  • Multimedia artists  (promoting their art)

Possible video contents

  • Comedy monologs
  • Comedy skits
  • Virtual world travelogues
  • Music on the web
  • Disabilities left behind
  • Web work/monetization
  • Virtual world events
  • Motivational minutes
  • Tips for the Digital Community
  • Mini-lessons on video instruction
  • Sample instructional units on video.
  • Non-technical information of interest to the target audience.

How do we use web-worlds?:  Ideas

  • A video of a web-world discussion will open each issue.
  • People will have some connection to articles in the issue.
  • Some will have no experience in virtual-worlds.  For example:
  • An educational leader.
  • Someone with a disability.
  • An amateur comic.
  • An instructor of drama.

Possible final names for the magazine

  • The final name won't be "The Web Show"  because: The Big Web Show
  • Living On The Web
  • Living Digitally
  • Digital People.
  • The Digital Community
  • I invite more suggestions.
  • After I vet the ideas, an organizing committee will make the final selection.
  • Concept: We are people of the web talking to people of the web.

Initial licensing

Same as on my blog:
*********************************
License

  • Original text in this blog is CC By: unless specified public domain
  • Use as you please with attribution: link to the original.
  • All images without attribution in this blog are CC0: public domain.
*********************************

  • This kind of license is used to build visibility.
  • Visibility builds traffic.
  • Traffic brings attention.
  • Attention is what you can sell.

Need editors, and content

  • To manage a magazine, we need editors and sources.
  • We need one or more editors for each segment.
  • Education editor
  • Comedy editor
  • Multimedia editor
  • Theatrical editor
  • Game editor
  • Public service editor
  • People editor
  • New ideas editor
  • Some editors might be affiliated organizations.

I am seeking content now

  • For the present, publication schedule will be "as available."
  • When we have an editorial staff and content sources,
  • I hope publication can become monthly and then weekly.
