This sim was made to honor Dian Fossey, who single-handedly saved the mountain gorillas from certain extinction.  Educators: Would you rather tell about the work of Dian Fosse in this simulation or in a classroom?

The Virunga National Park (French: Parc National des Virunga), formerly named Albert National Park, is a 7,800-square-kilometre (3,000 sq mi) National Park that stretches from the Virunga Mountains in the South, to the Rwenzori Mountains in the North, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, bordering Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
Virunga is a volcanic mountain range in Africa. It is home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas.  There are only about 800 of them alive right now. There were only about 300 when Dian Fossey famously wrote about the death of Digit the gorilla in National Geographic.

Rosamond Halsey Carr (1912-2006) had a flower ranch in Rwanda,. After the Rwandan genocide, when 8 people were killed in her gardens, she turned her flower sheds in the Imbabazi Orphanage.    She was 84.    
Since that time Roz and her staff have cared for more than 400 children. Since Roz's passing in 2006, the orphanage is under the direction of Partners in Conservation and currently cares for more than 100 orphans (Rwanda Project ).  
Roz also wrote the book "Land of a Thousand Hills: My Life in Rwanda," with her niece, Ann Howard Halsey, chronicling her love affair with one of the world's most beautiful and tormented regions.
