***2016 ART: Virtual (digital) art is art. It is time to reinvent our language and our thinking.

Virtual art is art.  It is time to reinvent our thinking
Those painted canvas pictures, you hang on the wall--are the real?  No, they are really painted canvas.  You could call them pigmented art.  You don't because art is art and the medium is not relevant.  Except when the medium is new.   Virtual art has been emerging in many forms and was too new to be called (no modifier) art.  That was then.  This is now.

Digital art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1970s, various names have been used to describe the process including computer art and multimedia art, and digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art." -- Wikipedia

"Virtual art" refers to the method of production (produced in a virtual environment), not to the method of display.
  • The method of production is of great importance to the artist.
  • Not necessarily so to the buyer.
  • Of interest to the art gallery because they have have to take care of it.
  • Unless it is digital art, because that requires no caretaking.
  • But it still requires curation:

The display method for virtual art can include some of the old familiars

  • Bronze
  • Prints on paper (including high quality enameled paper
  • Ceramic
  • Plastic
  • Such art is exported from virtual worlds via 3d printing:  Shapeways

And that display method can include some new familiars

  • Video Screen (smart phone to 6-foot wall screen)
  • Audio accompaniment
  • Animation (GIFs, animated objects, video)
  • Interaction (user options, bots, other people, the artist)
  • Audio interaction (audio manipulation, comment recordings, live conversations.)
  • Virtual worlds (where the viewpoint is under the control of the observer)
  • Interactive virtual world (where the observer becomes a participant.)
