OpenSim - What it will take to get into prime time?
Invited post by Steve LaVigne,  CFO A Dimension Beyond, Inc.
As part of the OSHG initiative, I am posting articles by members of the Organization Committee and potential members of the OpenSim Development Committee.  All articles are open for comment.  The intent for these committees is that they represent the interests of the whole OpenSim community.
  • Steve LaVigne is Halcyon-Moses Liaison on the OSHG Organization Committee.
  • Steve Franklin is the av name for Steve LaVigne
  • Emphasis (bold) by Selby Evans.
  • The views expressed are those of Steve LaVigne.

Multiple ways to use OpenSim

  • Keep in mind that there are multiple ways to use OpenSim
  • As in SL: Register on a grid, load a viewer, enter and look around
  • As in SL: Rent land if you want
  • Hypergrid: Enter a hypergrid-connected grid, go to other such grids
  • Run your own grid on a grid host: INDEPENDING HOSTING
  • Run a grid on your own computer: Sim-on-a-stick

Editor's note

  • When I (Selby Evans) publish other people's work, I shift from author to editor.
  • I will only change the layout a bit, add hyperlinks, and make minor changes for clarity.
  • I post the article because I think some of my readers will be interested in it.
  • The views expressed are not necessarily mine.
  • You can reply to the author in comments on the article.
  • No captcha, no sign in, no delay in you reply promptly.

2016 HELP: HG: Clearing the kerfuffle: Firestorm needs help to keep compatible with OpenSim. HGProjects

Clearing the kerfuffle:
Firestorm needs help to keep compatible with OpenSim
A report by Maria Korolov, a leading news source for Hypergrid and OpenSim, lead some people to think that Firestorm might be giving up on its support for OpenSim and Hypergrid. A prompt  response from Firestorm leader Jessica Lyon, indicated that the Firestorm team wants to support these grids, but has trouble because it does not always get updating information from the devs.  I discuss some things the HG community could do to help Firestorm.

2016 PEOPLE: HG: New Media Arts plans to support the development of OpenSimulator/Hypergrid HGProjects

New Media Arts plans to support
    the development of OpenSimulator/Hypergrid
    Updated 10/23/2016
A discussion about the future of OpenSim (and hypergrid) software is emerging in the OpenSim community.  In this article, I gather some viewpoints and information.  I also cite some suggested future steps.
    -
New Media Arts (NMA) interested in stimulating the development of OpenSimulator software.  NMA is a non-profit corporation in the US. It can receive (and account for) US Tax deductible donations.
    -
I will lead the initial information-gathering effort, using OpenSim Virtual and this blog to gather, archive, and organize suggestions and suggested plans.  I will use this blog as the primary archive for now--G+ groups are not easy to search for past contents.
    -
If you have organized information, recommendations, plans or the like, I would be interested in presenting that as an invited article on my blog.  Material on the blog can be found by Google search or by Search on Site (Chrome browser)--in the upper left corner of any page.

2015 OPENSIM: PROMO: BIZ: HGProject. Should your grid have a Chamber of Commerce?

    OpenSim Community.
Should your grid have a Chamber of Commerce?
A Chamber of Commerce (US and others) works to foster the interests of the local community (a city, for example)  A virtual world grid is much like a city--I like the term virtual village.  It might make sense for people in a grid to organize a community group for the purpose of promoting and growing the grid.

What is a Chamber of Commerce?

A chamber of commerce (or board of trade) is a form of business network, e.g., a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to work on behalf of the business community. They generally interpret this mission broadly, assuming that working in the interests of the city (say, for population growth) is also in the interests of the business community.

2017 OSHG: Marcus Milne talks about his worlds on the web

Marcus Milne talks about his worlds on the web
    Updated 2/4/2017
Some suggestions about a possible business model for a browser-viewer.  The model could draw on existing OpenSim resources and developing browser-viewer technology.

    Screen capture from Chrome browser
    • The above image shows Marcus Milne's virtual world in a browser.
    • His idea is to have light virtual worlds that would run on mobile devices.
    • He does not have the funding to set up virtual worlds like OpenSim.
    • He can make very realistic avatars.
    • I wonder if browser-worlds might work as entry ports to OpenSim worlds.

2017 OSHG: Physics with ubODE. How does it do vehicles?

Physics with ubODE in virtual worlds.
    How does it do vehicles?
A new physics engine, ubODE, has been introduced in the upcoming version of OpenSimulator (OS0.9.X).  Since some grids  are running OS0.9.x, it is possible to get video demonstrations of vehicle performance under ubODE.  Here are 3, showing that vehicle performance can be quite good.

PROMO: WRITE: HYPERGRID: Send G+ communities your blog links. Tell a community about your article

Send G+ communities your blog links.
Tell a community about your article
If you blog, you have a target audience.  G+ communities may be gathering your audience for you.  Here are some G+ communities I have found useful in promoting articles about virtual worlds.

      Posting to G+ communities

      • I post to my G+ profile stream, then go to the profile and share.
      • I can share with G+ communities and to my circles.
      • Some blogging software supports auto-posting, which may be a bit easier.
      • I use Feedly to follow these communities and link to other posts sometimes
      • I use my profile stream to collect links.
      • I go to my profile stream and send links to groups that might be interested.
      • Links to my articles and links to other articles.
      • I don't send every link to every group that might be interested.
      • Just one or two groups per link.   If anyone wants more links,
      • they can look on my profile stream.

      Search on page

      • You can search this or any webpage for words of phrases,
      • In Chrome, press Ctrl f to open the search bar (upper right).
      • Other viewers probably offer this service, too, maybe with the same Ctrl f.
      • You can use this on the list of G+ communities, too.
      • If you don't find the community you want, maybe you should create it.
