2015 HG: Testing HG addresses and address forms. Failure is not forever

Testing HG addresses and address forms.
 Failure is not forever
HG travel has a bothersome number of fault modes.  To be a happy hypergrid traveler, you need a fair amount of Fault Tolerance.  The good side is that Fault Tolerance is a useful life skill.  Here is your chance to practice it.

Here is what I do then

  • After the first failure, try again.
  • I find that about half the time the second try works.
  • I suspect too quick a timeout on the request
  • If it fails again, I go to the Trouble mode (See below)
-

Trouble mode

Use the standard form of HG address

  • Put the HG address into the region search field of the World Map (Ctrl M),
  • That's the white bar next to the Find Button.  Click Find.
  • Click Teleport if it lights up.
-
  • Current HG address specs cover gridport, and (optionally) region:
  • Addresses on the Hypergrid.
  • They do not take you to a specified place/parcel in the region.
  • Example: (no region)  grid.kitely.com:8002  (To Kitely Welcome Center).
  • Example: (region= Cookie II) grid.kitely.com:8002:Cookie II.

If you were trying for a region, just try for the grid

  • Cut the region off the address
  • In the example above, you would cut off the colon and Cookie II
  • :Cookie II
  • Give the remainder to the world map.  That should take you to the grid entry
  • If you get to the grid, use the world map on that grid to search for the region.
  • If you can't find the region, it may have been removed.
  • Check your source of the address.
  • There may be information on the grid's web page.
  • The last part of the grid address should give the grid name.
  • In the examples above, the grid name is Kitely and the url is kitely.com.
  • If you go to the web page, you will find a "Contact us" button.
  • There you could ask for more information.

If you can't find the grid, it may have closed or have a new url.

  • See if you can find it in Hyperica:  Search bar, upper right
  • If Hyperica does not help, post a question in Opensim Virtual
  • There are people from many grids in OSV
  • So if there is anything to know, somebody there is likely to know it.

Meanwhile, try again

  • Some small grids are offline part of the day, or at unpredictable times.
  • Some grids have to go offline for a day or so for updates and maintenance.

How to handle a Hypergrid address

From any Hypergrid-enabled grid, paste the address into the navigation bar of Firestorm and press enter. Or paste it into the world map search bar of any viewer, search, and click Teleport when the destination is found. If it doesn't work, don't give up. Try again in a minutes.  Sometimes the first try fails (probably times out).  And try again a few hours later. Some hypergrid destinations are offline part of the day.
