2015 HELP: HYPERGRID: Firestorm hops: Textable travel links; for the HG BeatThis list? Barely

Firestorm hops, textable travel links;
for the HG BeatThis list?  Barely
Updated 4/4/2015
The ideal Hypergrid address form would do what a SLurl does in Second Life.  I can put it in a blog article or a post on social media.  You can click on a SLurl or drag it onto your viewer screen and the system takes you to that location, including the coordinates.  The method in Firestorm does not do all that, but I can put it in a blog article, you can paste it into the address bar, and it will take you to that location, including the coordinates. But that only works reliably ingrid.

  • If we of the Hypergrid generation want to attract normal people,
  • we need to make Hypergrid addresses more user friendly.
  • We need one stop dropping you where you want to go.
  • Right to the coordinates. As a SLurl does in SL
  • We need to be able to tell people to paste the address into the navigation bar.
  • Not a long story about "open your world map (ctrl m) ..."
  • Normal people will not do that.

Who cares about this?

  • Store owners who want to give easy directions to their stores.
  • Venue managers who want to give easy directions to their events.
  • Anyone who wants to bring Hypergrid traffic to their parcel with a web post.
  • Anyone who wants the Hypergrid to attract more people.
  • Bloggers who want to give easy directions to the places they write about.
  • (Support your local blogger.)

Firestorm 2-step (Bloggers note)

  • 1. Hop to grid/region:   hop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II
  • 2. Hop to coordinateshop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II/131/382/22
  • One step would be better, but this method:
  • Uses the bar that SLers regularly use for SLurls
  • Uses the same bar in both steps.
  • Could work in one step if Firestorm upgrades to the Hypergrid hop.
  • May work in Kokua and other viewers

Where are we now?

Firestorm hops can be used:

  • You drop it into the navigation bar (top of the Firestorm screen)
  • It includes the target coordinates for one stop dropping
  • You get the hop at the location--click in the Navigation bar
  • It works reliably for addresses within your home grid
  • Can br written in text for notecards, blogs, and web pages (text-friendly).
  • Can take you to any grid coordinates on a sim, megaregion, or varregion.
  • But
  • You can't hop to coordinates on the Hypergrid.
  • And you can't get a valid hop from a place you got to on the Hypergrid.
  • Still you can use it if you know how to take it apart or put it together

Form of the hop protocol (from OpenSimulator: Hypergrid: Wiki)

  • hop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II /131/382/22
  • hop://           grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II  /131/382/22
  • hop prefix   HG address                                 Location coordinates
  • So you can can get the HG address and the coordinates from it.
  • Or you make a hop if you know the grid address and the location.

Make your own Firestorm hop

  • In your own grid, you just click the Nav bar and copy the what appears there
  • In another grid, what appears there probably will not work.
  • (Not in 4.6.9. -- maybe later)
  • The coordinates are all you need. You already have the HG address
  • You used the HG address to get to the place.
  • The hop that will work is:  hop://          HG address
  • That will only take people to the sim/region.
  • To get to coordinates, you need to use the Firestorm 2-step.
HG arrival point with walkin TPs

-
  • Scripts and walkinTPs are at the Thinkerer box on Cookie II
  • Hop to grid/region:  hop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II
  • Hop to coordinateshop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II/122/355/22

Why bloggers need to make hops in Hypergrid worlds

Standard HG address specs

  • Current HG address specs cover gridport, and (optionally) region:
  • Addresses on the Hypergrid
  • These take you to a grid or to a specific region (sim, world) in that grid
  • They do not take you to a specified place/parcel in the region.
  • Example: (no region)  grid.kitely.com:8002  (To Kitely Welcome Center)
  • Example: (region=Cookie II) grid.kitely.com:8002:Cookie II
  • You arrive at the center of the region (128,128,nn)
  • Or at the center of the Southwest corner of a megaregion,
  • unless the region uses a parcel trick
  • You paste this address in the region search bar of the world map, Find, Teleport

How to handle a Hypergrid address

From any Hypergrid-enabled grid, paste the address into the navigation bar of Firestorm and press enter. Or paste it into the world map search bar of any viewer, search, and click Teleport when the destination is found. If it doesn't work, don't give up. Try again in a minutes.  Sometimes the first try fails (probably times out).  And try again a few hours later. Some hypergrid destinations are offline part of the day.
