This window shows people nearby who have voice turned on.  These are people you can talk to in voice if you want.  You can use this window to adjust speaking volume of the people on the list.  Hover the cursor over a name, click on the green dot (with the letter i in it), move the slider to change volume.

2013 1stHELP: Speak button (Microphone)

The speak button (on click) turns your microphone on or off (toggles)
-
Normally, you will automatically be connected to the voice system and may hear other people talking if you have  loudspeakers or headphones on.  A white dot over your head indicates that you are connected to voice.  A similar dot over another head means that both of you are connected to the voice system and should be able to talk to each other in voice.  Green waves show that the person is speaking or otherwise sending sound in the voice system.

Before you try to talk in voice, note:

• With loudspeakers you need to turn your microphone off when others are speaking.
• The best thing to use is headphones with a boom microphone attached.   
• A set like that will sell for about $25 USD at electronics stores in USA.
• You may need to make volume adjustments as described below

CAUTION --------------------------CAUTION

If you leave your microphone on, you are bringing everyone near you into your room.  They hear your private conversions. They could even record your conversations.

What?  A conference nearly a year long?  
How can you do that?

You can do that online, using Facebook and Skype. 

The conference consists of an ongoing series of online Panel Discussions with empathy and compassion experts from all fields and walks of life. The panels take place using Skype group video conferencing and are recorded and placed on Youtube for viewing at any time

They could add Virtual Worlds.  Maybe they will.  After all, a year-long conference leaves time for innovation  in vivo.

The people button (2 heads) brings up the people window.  This window has four tabs:

• Nearby. People near me, Information about them
• My friends.  Message my friends.  
• My groups. Contact my groups  
• Recent. Reopen recent IMs 
• Blocked:  Review and end blocks on people and objects

The Nearby tab shows people nearby, information about them, and how to contact them.

The appearance button opens your avatar (outfit) closet.  For beginners, it comes stocked with a small collection of avatar costumes.  You can immediately wear any of these as shown in the Appearance window.  Wearing your choice of these is the easiest way to change your appearance.
