2017 WW: Cybalounge Building. Combining primitives

Cybalounge Building.  Combining primitives
Instructions for how to build a compound object in Cybalounge by putting simple prims together
Chair construction completed
  • But it's not a chair yet.
  • Assembled, but not completed.

    Start building?

    • Not exactly.  Start planning.
    • The seat will be the main element, so how big should it be?
    • I measured my own chair--the one I sit on to write.
    • Conveniently, I have a tape measure that measures in centimeters.
    • (If you don't, remember that Google does conversions.)
    • With a little adjustment for simplicity, the dimensions were:
    • Height 50 cm
    • Width 50 cm
    • Depth 50 cm
    • I will want to paint it.. So I look in HTML Color Picker and choose
    • Yellow:  #ffff00
    • Blue:  0000ff
    • Lower is best darker, so I will make the seat blue.
    • The arms and back will be yellow.

Now I can make the seat

    Next make the arms

    • I want the other parts of the chair to be child objects of the seat.
    • So I will try to remember to click the seat before I create each part.
    • That first selects the seat and then creates a child object of the seat
    • The arms need to come about 30 cm above the seat,
    • So I make them 80 cm. tall and 12 cm. wide and 50 cm, deep.
    • The location of an object is its center on each dimension.
    • A child object is positioned relative to the parent
    • To position the right arm laterally, I figure the distance between the centers.
    • That is half the width of the seat plus half the width of the arm.
    • 25+6 =31 centimeters between centers on the width dimension.
    • Relative positioning sets the center of the parent prim at 0,0,0.
    • So the other arm must be offset by -31 centimeters.
    • I planned for the arms to rise 30 centimeters above the seat.
    • That means its center will rise 15 cm. above the seat center.
    • And I want to paint the arms Yellow:  #ffff00
     Chair arms made and positioned

    Last, make the back

    • I pick 100 cm. for the height of the back.
    • Width is 50 cm to match the seat, depth is 12 cm. like the arms.
    • Afterthought: I saw that it would look better if the back also covered the arms,
    • so I added 24 cm to the width of the back.
    • Back is 100 cm. in height.  Center of back is 50 cm. up.
    • Center of seat is 25 cm. up, so back is +25 cm up relative to seat
    • Depth of back is 12 cm. Distance between centers is 31 cm. again
    • But this time on the depth dimension.
    • Paint: Yellow:  #ffff00
    Back made and positioned
Selected items are lighter in color
    • But it is not a chair yet.  The pieces are cut out and assembled.
    • Now I need to glue the pieces together.
    • In the next episode I will show how to glue the pieces and what that means to you.
