2015 EDU: Virtual epidemiology investigation, Stephen Gasior on REDgrid

Virtual epidemiology investigation
Stephen Gasior on REDgrid
A recreation in a virtual world of a world-famous investigation.  The battle of the theories, the collection of data, the emergence of scientific investigation, the credibility of evidence, the beginning of discoveries that made big cities possible.

    • The adventure begins in the anteroom of professor Klein's lecture hall.
    • You are supposed to get clothing of the era by clicking the sign.
    • But as a time-traveler, I don't bother.
    • People ignore timeline violations.
    Professor Klein lectures
    about the miasma theory
    • Miasma theory
    • Professor Klein is a Non-Playing Character (NPC).
    • No real person is required to operate him.
    • Thus he is always available when a student comes in.
    • A lot more convenient than a "real" professor.
    John Snow gives the visitor
    an assignment
    The view down Broad street
    • I need to interview the people living on broad street.
    • Conveniently, they are out on the street now.
    -
    • These are all NPC's.
    • Always available.
    • At no cost.
    Interview
    • Has anyone in the house had cholera?
    • Where did they get their water?
    -
    • The results emerge:
    • People who drank from the Broad Street pump.
    • People who did not drink from that pump did not get cholera.
    The infamous Broad Street pump

And now a word from the YesButters

Yes but this experience is only available to students who have a computer that can run virtual world software.
    -
Or the experience would be available to students who have access to a computer in the class laboratory, which could be available and operating 24/7 if needed.
    -
Actually, much of the experience could be replicated on web-based unit.   The meetings with any of the people could be rendered in video, simply by video capture of the event in the virtual world.  The conversations could be rendered in voice, as was done here:
Flying Saucers Return: A pilot (Episode 1)
Video could also present the build up of data points on John Snow's original map.
    -
This kind of experience could also incorporate practice in web-sourced research, as I have suggested here in the links I provided.
