Logging on to Kitely or another grid
with Firestorm

Why use Firestorm?

Illustrated instructions on how to start exploring Opensim with Firestorm for Opensim.
These instructions apply to Firestorm 4.5.1 or later.  They may not apply to earlier versions of Firestorm or to other viewers.

Get an account on some grid

  • Opensim Grid list
  • Firestorm has an easy way to handle accounts on several grids.
  • Click here to get an account at Kitely.  
  • Keep your user name and password handy.  
  • You will need those to set up your login on Firestorm.
  • Caution: If you make up a password, keep it to less than 10 characters.
  • Some viewers may cut longer passwords and so make the login fail.

Install Firestorm

  • Download Firestorm from here.
  • Be sure to get Firestorm for Opensim
  • Firestorm for Second Life will not work on Opensim.
  • If your operating system is 32 bit, be sure to get the the 32 bit version.
  • If your operating system is 64 bit, you can get either the 32 or 64 bit version.
  • But Firestorm for Opensim will work on Second Life. 
  • (You many need to set Select Mode to Hybrid to use this viewer in SL.)
  • Remove any previous version of Firestorm viewer.
  • Use the Uninstall a Program  feature on your computer for that removal.
  • On most Windows systems, Uninstall a Program is in the Control Panel.
  • On other systems, the feature name may be different.  
  • Leave untouched  any other viewers you have.

Firestorm help

Login with Firestorm

  • Installation should leave a Firestorm button on you computer.
  • Click that to start Firestorm.
  • Fill in the blanks as shown in the screen-shot above.
  • If you don't see the Start at bar, start anyway, then:
  • Go to Preferences-General tab-- start location-- check show on login.
  • You will be able to select the place you login from your favorite Landmarks,
  • After you gather some landmarks.
  • Be sure to check the Remember me box.

Login to Kitely

  • Suggestion: Set Kitely Welcome Center as your home.  
  • Kitely Welcome Center is always running, so you can login faster there

Places in Kitely

  • Kitely public places
  • Kitely provides web pages that take you to specific places.
  • All these places are free and you can stay as long as you want at no cost to you.
  • A free sandbox (no time charges) is available on Cookie II.  
  • You have to be a member of the authorized group.  Contact Selby Evans in Kitely

Easy login to other places

  • Before you start Firestorm.
  • Open the web page that leads to the login destination you want.
  • The web page below leads to the Kitely Welcome Center (no charge to visit):
  • http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world/Ilan-Tochner/Kitely-Welcome-Center
  • You can find other places here: Kitely public places (no charge to visit)
  • Click "Enter World
  • Start Firestorm, check the settings.  Ignore what it says under "Start at"
  • Click Login
  • You should arrive at the destination you chose.
  • Hint: keep a folder with web links to the places you want to visit. 

Easy login to favorite landmarks

  • Get landmarks of places you visit 
  • World (top menu)--Landmark this place
  • Open your landmark folder (globe graphic, usually on bottom menu).
  • Click the Landmarks tab.
  • Click-drag an important LM to the top of your screen.
  • Just under the navigation bar. Your favorites list will go there
  • Open Preferences-Privacy-General
  • Check "Show my favorite landmarks at login."  
  • Your favorites will appear in the drop-down under Start at

HG travel

Troubles 

  • If the Log into Grid field is missing, press Shift-Ctrl-G
  • Kitely should be in the list of preset grids
  • (If not, open the grid manager and set the Grid URI to:
  • http://grid.kitely.com:8002  
  • Then press refresh.)
