VIRTUAL REALITY VS VIRTUAL WORLDS
SMACKDOWN!
*************************
Not your father's lecture. A lively debate on the merits of virtual worlds and virtual reality! Virtual reality (stereo headset) versus virtual worlds, mostly using a monocular screen to look around in a 3D world. The difference is like the difference between a typical movie and a movie in stereo (with special glasses).

- OSCC videos are up
Our first presenter, Marie Vans, argues that “VR is the future, and the future is now!” Our second presenter, Bethany Winslow, cautions that “Regardless of what VR platforms are used in the future, designers of effective immersive learning with VR must know the history of virtual worlds in education as well as have some hands-on experience in using them.” The sparing partners are moderated by Dr. Valerie Hill, the director of the Community Virtual Library in Second Life, Avacon, and Kitely.

Use patterns for headsets
- VR Headset Owners Only Use Their Devices Six Hours a Month on Average (Study)
- The figure is probably higher for adolescents playing games.
- And maybe lower for people with adult objectives.
- It seems likely that people are spending much of their 3D time looking at screens rather than headsets.
A personal comment
- I have been in 3D worlds since 2005.
- I spend several hours a day in 3D worlds.
- I do not yet have a binocular headset.
- I will probably get a headset when they are convenient to put on and take off.
- If I were playing 3D games I might be content to wear the headset for the duration of the game.
- But I am building, scripting, interacting with people, working on my blog and attending events.
- I often move between the 3D screen and browser or files on my computer.
- I have several windows open and want access to any of them.
- Obviously I use my 3D worlds in many ways that are not compatible with the full immersion of a headset.
