2017 OSHG: Would Kitely offer Halcyon as an optional version of opensim?

Would Kitely offer Halcyon as
an optional version of opensim?
Speculation on the possibility of Kitely running Halcyon as an optional alternative to the current OpenSimulator, with Hypergrid travel only available from the OpenSimulator worlds.  The special mode of operation that Kitely uses might make it possible to run Halcyon as an option on the Kitely grid.

  • Halcyon is not ready as a substitute for the dev version of OpenSimulator.
  • It does not have Hypergrid capabilities.  That is a deal-breaker for most of us.
  • But maybe not for Kitely, because of the way it operates.

The way Kitely operates does more than save money and energy

    • A Kitely world is usually resting on a file on a solid-state drive.
    • When I want to go to my world, Kitely fetches the copy and puts it on a server.
    • I may have to wait 10 or 20 seconds before I can go to my world.
    • I like it because my world is not wasting energy when nobody is there.
    • But it also allows some variation in the software I am running,
    • I can have a world running Bullet Sim and another world running ODE.
    • Could Kitely offer the option of running dev OS or Halcyon?
    • Technically that is probably possible.
    • Whether it is practical depends on the effort needed to get the two to work together.
    • And the expected return on that investment.
    • But this offering could provide differentiation if Halcyon becomes attractive.

    Halcyon does not have Hypergrid

    • If you were in a Halcyon grid in Kitely, you could not travel the Hypergrid from there.
    • So you would teleport to the Kitely Welcome Center and catch the Hypergrid there.
    • Not much of a problem if I had a good reason to use Halcyon.

Why would we want to use Halcyon?

    • Actually, I don't know--now.
    • I hear that Halcyon has a better script engine and a better physics engine.
    • But we don't know if that would give noticeable improvement in what we want to do.
    • There is a different scripting engine and a different scripting engine.
    • Probably a lot of scripts would have to be rewritten to fit the new engines.
    • And the generous free scripts in Outwoldz might not all be usable.
    • Welcome to the InWorldz Scripting Wiki
    • The Halcyon wiki cites lots of LSL scripts,
    • but I don't know whether they all work in Halcyon.
    • Actually, we won't know how much effort a shift to Halcyon would cost
    • until some scripters try it out.

Infinite Metaverse Alliance will set up for testing

    •  IMA is close (I hear) to having a server for trying Halcyon
    • and for running comparison tests between Halcyon and OpenSimulator.
    • (The current Halcyon uses Firestorm and the other third-party viewers.)
    • Steve has a recent report on the R&D server project.
    • I suppose this server could also be used assess interoperability
    • between Halcyon and OpenSimulator.
