*2017 HG: EDU: We are building new worlds in the digital metaverse. We don't need to keep to the old ways

We are building new worlds in the digital metaverse.
We don't need to keep to the old ways
When Second Life first made a user-built virtual world available to us, we wanted the world to look like the familiar Old World.   But do we want to continue with buildings? Maybe for some purposes.  But maybe for other purposes we want to redesign the virtual world to suit our new purposes.

  • Maybe for beginners we want to make the place look familiar
  • But we carry over lots of stuff we don't need.
  • Some of it is just useless clutter
  • Some of it gets in the way of what we want to do.
  • Here are some things to reconsider.
  • (More after the break, scroll down!)

Metaverse events, current and upcoming

    • Sure, back in the old world, classrooms were places you came to for instruction.
    • Classrooms make no sense in the age of the internet.
    • We get instruction from a device connected to the internet.
    • The location does not matter so long as it can provide a good internet connection.
    • We use a 5th dimension, the internet dimension.
    • The instructor is right there in our internet device.
    • And so are our classmates, if we want to (are allowed to) study with them.
    • So if it makes for an easier transition, you can put people in classrooms.
    • But we look for better alternatives when we see that classrooms are boring.

    But if not  classrooms, where?

Places for practice -- Language learning

    • Beginners in a language need to talk effectively about common environments
    • The place to practice is in replicas of common environments.
    • Virtual worlds make that easy.  You can even provide instructor objects.
    • An instructor object may say its name (on click) with correct pronunciation.
    • Or it might give more information in a notecard--like how the object is used.
    • More elaborate plans could provide self-testing.
    • For example, give instructions in the new language, evaluate compliance.

    The Hypergrid WIP Show

    • The Hypergrid WIP is a one hour "show & tell" of works in progress or recently completed.
    • Everyone is invited.  Building, scripting, promotion, entertainment-- whatever you are working on.
    • Selby will be doing test video capture of presentations in voice.  These may be posted on YouTube.
    • Presentations are in voice and text.
    • For text presentations, best bring the text in a notecard and paste it into chat.
    • Voice presentations may be captured in video.
    • Stills and videos from the show may appear in this blog and elsewhere.

                                  1. I agree completely. No need for a roof, unless you're looking for historical accuracy, or want an audience's sightlines restricted.
