***2016 EDU: Web-world use case: Conversational spoken English! Or any other language

Web world use case:
Conversational spoken English!
Or any other language
Language learning is well suited for virtual worlds and web-worlds offer an easy way to get started. Immersive learning on the browser.  Here is an introduction to web-worlds as they might be used for instruction in a language.
The old way to learn a language
  • Virtual worlds are used extensively for language instruction (see after the break).
  • They let learners learn the language in an environment where they will need it.
  • Learners can be immersed in the environment they are talking about.
  • Learners can practice together as they talk about things around them.

Why are virtual worlds not used more for language learning?

  • Virtual worlds require expensive, graphics capable computers.
  • You have to download and install a viewer.
  • You have  to learn how to move around, communicate, and activate things.

Now you can put a small virtual world in a browser.

  • It will run on almost any modern computer.
  • You talk, move, sit and click on things.  A lot like you do on a flat web page.
  • If you come in when someone is there, they can help you.
  • People can easily come in on impulse, just to see what is offered.
  • If people like your web-world, they may want to come into your virtual world.
  • Web-worlds, progress and possibilities: Summary

    Languge learning in virtual worlds

A web-world can look like any place that people need to learn about

    • A restaurant where you can practice ordering a meal.
    • An airport where you can practice check-in, security, and boarding.
    • A passenger cabin where you can talk with crew and other passengers.
    • A hotel where you can register and get a room.
    • An office where you can handle business activities.
    • A grocery store where you can talk about household items.

    Scripted objects can

    • Talk on click--tell their names or say how they are used.
    • Show text or give web links on click.
    • Ask questions on click and check/record answers.
    • Play a part in a learning game.
