Own your own Dinosaur, virtually!
(Virtual is better than real in this case)
For the kid who wants to be a paleontologist, for the teacher of  introductory ecology, for the producer of adventure videos, for anyone who wants to keep pets in an apartment, virtual is the way to go.

See this critter "in person" at several locations in the Metaverse:

              T. Rex

This beautiful but scary dinosaur will wander around your virtual property. By default this T-Rex will move in a random walk, turning its head around to look for prey. On every step it makes a heavy tread sound. It climbs like a mountain goat on steep terrain. It turns its head back and forth as it walks, opening its jaws to make dozens of different vocalizations. The legs are articulated to move in a realistic way.
              -
You can click on the T-Rex to bring up a dialog to put it in Hunt (random walk), Migrate (walk in a straight line) Charge (run a short distance with jaws snapping) or Pose mode. In the latter mode it will stand still and let you change the head and leg position.
              -
The T-Rex will 'die' if hit by a Magic Bullet or Unity Systems weapon, so it can be hunted with many weapons. However, it charges towards gunshots, snapping its jaws! So you might prefer to use a quiet weapon like a bow or a spear from Ocean Engineering! It may take many hits to kill a dinosaur, and when wounded they try to escape by running. When the T-Rex dies, it falls over, bleeds and thrashes its head and feet around for a few seconds.
              -
By default it will “respawn” and come back to life in about a minute. Or you can revive it from the menu. The T-Rex has several modes to control where it is allowed to walk. It will stay inside your parcel, turning away from the edges and turning away from the water's edge. This mode is a convenient way to corral a T-Rex in a small area. If you allow, it can walk anywhere in a 256x256 SIM, crossing over into any parcel on your sim that has “friendly” permissions. Or you can give it permission to wander everywhere in a mega region. In InWorldz it can cross into other regions in a Safe Sims list that you provide. It can only walk on the base terrain, or on flat terrain prims next to your SkyBox.
              -
The T-Rex is a non-physical object so it is very low lag. It is made out of 14 prims. 8 leg prims, (each leg is made of 4 separate articulated mesh prims), body, 6 heads in 2 mesh prims for looking around, two sculpted arms and a tail. This is a COPYable critter so you can rez a pack of them for one low price.

              How would you use it?

For the smart youngster with dino interests and tech-capable family

              • This kid already has a good computer.
              • How about pet dinosaurs?
              • You could give that as a sim-on-a-stick,
              • if that computer can handle virtual worlds.
              • You get some dinosaurs.  Kayaker has others in his store.
              • (I think you can get the dinos with export permissions--you need that.)
              • In Kitely or other hypergrid place that lets you make OARs
              • You make a sim or varregion and put dinos on it.
              • You download the varregion to your computer as OAR.
              • You import the OAR into your SOAS.
              • You get another sim that will serve as "Intro to virtual worlds"
              • You may have to put it together yourself, but there is content available
              • Make an OAR of that and add that to your SOAS grid too.
              • Give the stick (USB flash drive) to the kid.

              For teaching introductory ecology

              • Your Dino world can have lots of different environments.
              • Each dino need to go into an environment that works for it.
              • You must put each of your dinos in its best environment.
              • Or it will die.
              • Study the dinos and environments, then put the dinos in the right place

              Make your own adventure video

                  1. Really enjoyed your post here. Great perspective on how VR is going to impact business and is well on its way. There is going to be a lot more buzz about this technology, and the impacts are going to be tremendous.
3D is the same. Would love to hear your take on the next wave or VR and 3D in our everyday lives, past gaming.
