2017 IMA: TECH: IMA takes on Kokua as a dedicated Open Simulator viewer

IMA takes on Kokua as a dedicated 
Open Simulator viewer (OSV)

The previous lead programmer for the viewer Kokua is retiring and asking for volunteers  to take over the project.  Infinite Metaverse Alliance is forking the code to take over the OpenSim part.  (Kokua was already being split to provide an dedicated OpenSim viewer.)  The dedicated OSim viewer can be modified to fit the needs and interests of the OSim community.

Why a MOOC is better than a conference.

At least it is for the tech population, the people who are comfortable using computers, the internet and the web.  For those not yet in the tech population, a MOOC is a massive open online course. Since it is available over the internet, it requires no travel, can be held over a month rather than a weekend, and can easily be captured in video for lasting availability on the the web.

Do they have a business model?

Cybalounge has the basis of a service to support user-built web-worlds.  If there is enough demand for such worlds, a service like that could develop into a profitable business.  Here I consider the current status of user-built web-worlds and the services that might have commercial potential.

Web-worlds 

Web-worlds are 3D worlds that can reach almost everyone who uses a browser.  They use HTML5 and WebGL (Web Graphics Library), both available on all modern browsers.   A web-world can be accessed in a low-cost laptop, a Chromebook, an Ipad or a tablet.

Capabilities:  

• Easy access with low cost equipment that is widely available.   
• Security level of https.  
• Can import products made for current virtual worlds.  
• Quick and easy interaction with other people.  
• Can be embedded in other web pages.
• IMA web-world gives a sample of virtual worlds. Join a meeting, talk to live people from the other side
