2016 HG: NEW: Community-based entry: Welcome paths for community seekers in OpenSim. HGProject

Community-based entry to virtual worlds:
Welcome path for community seekers
Updated 7/2/2016
Communities in some OpenSim virtual worlds can bring new people directly into their their places. They can provide entry instruction specifically suited to bring people into the community.  They can bring people into a place that gives an immediate introduction to the activities of the community, provides them with suitable avatar and equipment and arranges for prompt contact with group members.
  • Don't count on people coming into HG because they want to be in a virtual world.
  • Most of us are here because of what we can do in virtual worlds.
  • Much of the doing depends on other people.
  • We are here because of our communities.
  • In OpenSim, communities can take charge of their own entry path.
  • In social media, OpenSim communities can do their own marketing
  • In Google groups, OpenSim communities can communicate.
-
  • So imagine your community promoting its offerings to the public.
  • Avatar Repertory Theater starts community promotion. HG projects
  • The promotion comes from feeder sites that link to your website.
  • There they see how to get into your virtual world.
  • With instructions that bring them into your community place.
  • And in your place you have set up a welcome site.
  • A site specifically designed for entry into your community.
  • With free avatars suited to your community.
  • With instruction on skills used in your community.
  • With an invitation to join the community inworld group.
  • In that group they can introduce themselves in IM.
  • They can maybe start a conversation with others online at the time.
  • You don't have to imagine.  You can visit.

        Suggestions

        • Have a web page showing the benefits the community offers to newcomers
        • The web page should show stills and videos of community activities.
        • The stills and videos should show people enjoying their participation.
        • Where possible, include sounds of people enjoying activities.
        • The message is: This is what it is like here, come join in.
        • Then:  Here's how to join in!
