Hello world!  I'm NubieTubie, 
and I'm here to rescue you.  
From the flat world, that is.

Introducing Nubie Tubie, a fictional character brought to life to represent new people coming into virtual worlds as beginners--Newbies.  The inworld adventures of Newbie are intended to show the world the beginners experience and perhaps to suggest ways to make that experience easier.    
  • What is the flat world, you ask.
  • It is the world you are looking at right now.  
  • The world of the flat screen.  
  • There is another world on the internet, one where I can walk around. 
  • Where I can go places, chat with friends, make friends, listen to music.
  • Where I can build things out of nothing and store things in the cloud.
  • Where I can find people that share my interests.  
  • Where I can work with people that like the same things I do. 
  • Where I can--But wait!  I don't know what I can do.  I must go there to find out.

The Hypergrid adventures of Newbie Tubie.    

Newbie: Who am I?  I am one of the people in Selby's head.  Selby called me in to explain how Hypergrid works.   That's very odd because I have no idea how Hypergrid works.   But I will try to find out and you can watch me.  I do have a mentor, Older the elder.

Older the elder:  I am Older the elder, the oldest man in the world still partly alive.  Newbie is going off on a quest to find the secret of the Hypergrid.  When you go on a quest, you are supposed to get a wise old mentor, like Obi Wan Kenobi.   Instead, he gets me.  I am another of the people in Selby's head, but I have always been a comic character.

Nubie:  I was supposed to get a wise mentor, but all I get is a wise guy.

Older: Worry not, my young Newbie.  The Candu clan, I come from.  Help you learn, I will.

Newbie:  Wow!  You are sounding like a wise mentor already.

Older: Told you, I did.  You must learn the Candu powers if you are to come with me to the virtual worlds.

Nubie: I'll try.

Older: No!   Do.  Or do not.  There is no try.  The Candu do not understand try.  We do.

Nubie:  OK, what do I do first?

Older: Find your goal.  The longest journey starts with knowing where you want to go.

Nubie:  I want to go into virtual worlds and explain them to people in the old world.

 I guess I need to know how to get into a virtual world for starters.   Can you give me a link?

Older:   What would you do if I weren't here?

Nubie:  I would do a Google search.  I just did that and got 22,100 results.  I can't deal with that.

Older:  You can't deal with that yet.  Everything is hard when you don't know how to do it. 
We of the Candu know the power of yet.   There are those who have gone before you.  Hear from them:
Nubie: Ah! something to read.  What should I do after I read this?

Older: You could wait for Godot.

Nubie: Oh, I know that line.  "But what shall I do while waiting?"

Older: Do.  Reading is a prelude to doing in the Candu world.

Nubie:  So reading that article is my next step?
-
Older:  No.  Why will you read that article?
-
Nubie:  Because you recommended it.  Isn't that how mentoring is supposed to work?

Older: How will you know when you are finished?
-
Nubie:  When I get to the end of the article, I suppose.

Older:  That was what you learned to do in school.  Now you read to be able to do something.  
-
Nubie:  So I am finished when I am able to do what I set out to do.

Older:  Your goal is your guide.  What do you expect to get from the article?  
-
Nubie:  A series of steps that will get me into a virtual world.  And since reading is a prelude to doing, I will do each step.  I will probably skim over the article to see if it has the steps I expect.   And to notice where they are.  I can always go back later for the details.

Older:  Now that you know where you are going, you are ready to start.  It is almost time for me to leave.

Nubie:  Oh, no. Don't go.  I still need you.

Older:  I will be back when you need me.  The goal of mentors is to work themselves out of a job.
