Virtual worlds, the myth of the steep learning curve.
It was a steep learning curve back in the old frontier days of virtual worlds.  But that was back when people were learning how to use virtual worlds.  Now people have developed some valuable uses for virtual worlds.  People who come into a virtual world to benefit from those uses need only a small set of skills for that purpose. Here I suggest a short list of skills and how to find out about them.

Basic skills you need in a virtual world when you start 

  • Walk around
  • Look around
  • Talk to people you meet (talk=typed text or voice)
  • Click on things (to get notecards, open doors, etc)

The ideal Hypergrid address form would do what a SLurl does in Second Life.  I can put it in a blog article or a post on social media.  You can click on it or drag it onto your viewer screen and the system would take you to that location, including the coordinates.  The method in Firestorm does not do all that, but I can put it in a blog article, you can paste it into the address bar, and it will take you to that location, including the coordinates. 

  • If we of the Hypergrid generation want to attract normal people,
  • we need to make Hypergrid addresses more useful and user friendly.
  • I report on an undocumented Firestorm feature that is a big step that way.

  • Thanks to Ed Merryman for verifying that it is undocumented.
  • Since this feature is undocumented, it may change or vanish in the future.
  • This or a similar feature may be available in other viewers.

Who would care about this?

  • Bloggers who want to give easy directions to the places they write about.
  • Store owners who want to give easy directions to their stores.
  • Venue managers who want to give easy directions to their events.
  • Anyone who wants to bring Hypergrid traffic to their parcel with a web post.

In 2009, I founded a fully immersive 3D UWA campus on the virtual world of Second Life, and we are now recognized as world leaders in global community development through this technology. This turned into my PhD, which examines how global communities have emerged through virtual worlds in particular among people with disability or chronic illnesses.

UWA Second Life founder, Jay Jay Jegathesan is also a PhD student, completing a part time PhD on the topic of community and collaboration through virtual worlds. 
This video is taken from the semi-final round of the 2014 3-Minute Thesis competition where PhD students are asked to speak for 3 minutes on their PhD research using no technology or props aside from a single image.

Cookie, Second Life – Since its founding in 2008, Avatar Repertory Theater has presented live theater productions and presentations featuring live voice acting in (c) Second Life.  As they move into their seventh year on the grid, bids are open on their first ever Shakespeare By Request 

Auction.  From now until November 7th, visitors to the Company’s theater on Cookie can place bids on different members of the acting company for the chance to choose a command performance by that performer from the works of William Shakespeare. These performances will be presented at the Company’s popular “Plays Around” scheduled for Friday, November 21st at 5:00 pm slt.

As part of an American Museum of Natural History summer camp project, The Vesuvius Group created a tool in Second Life to help the youth easily create models of the Cretaceous Era fish they were studying and release them into an interactive underwater environment.  At one of its regular Friday meetings, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life featured a presentation about this project by Jeroen Frans (Frans Charming in SL) founder of The Vesuvius Group.

Flash Gordon is the hero of a science fiction adventure comic strip originally drawn by Alex Raymond. First published January 7, 1934, the strip was inspired by and created to compete with the already established “Buck Rogers” adventure strip.  The “Flash Gordon” comic strip has been translated into a wide variety of media, including motion pictures, television and animated series.-This Friday A.R.T. presents a gender bending presentation based on the classic radio series – where Flash is a female, and Dale Arden is male.  Just wait till you meet Emperor Ming!
Presented live in Voice, free to all residents.  Donations welcomed.
