Try checking the Advanced Lighting Model (left column).
If your viewer slows too much, uncheck the Advanced Lighting Model.
These settings should give you shadows and other graphics improvements.

I just followed your instructions. I'm thrilled. Basic Shaders do weird things to my old video card, but when I jacked the RenderVolumeLODFactor up to 6 (If 4 is good six is better!) my sculptie problem vanished. My avie's amazing hair piece looks just as fantastic from twenty meters away as it does up close!
