2013 HELP: Torley Linden comments on Windows 7 support

Torley commented on my recent blog:
-
Windows 7 and that first hour experience in Second Life
-
I complained there about the system requirements given to newcomers when they consider installing Second Life.  These requirements make no mention of Windows 7 and give the impression that you cannot run Second Life on Windows 7.

that first hour experience in Second Life

People come into to Second Life using Windows 7.   Not remarkable.  Windows 7  reached general retail availability on October 22, 2009.  As of June 23, 2010, Windows 7 has sold 150 million copies which made it the fastest selling operating system in history with seven copies sold every second.

2013 WRITE: A Publishing House Grows in Second Life

A Publishing House Grows in Second  Life
-

-
"Ward Wood Publishing is a new press run in partnership by Adele Ward and Mike Fortune-Wood. We already have an exciting list of poetry and fiction which will be launched in the Autumn and Winter seasons. These are not only good reads, but they also represent fine additions to the literary scene from both previously published authors and also others new to the UK and international readership."
- Adele Ward is Jilly Kidd in Second Life.  She is the leader of the Written Word, a Second Life group for writers -- published, unpublished, wannabe published.

2013 TKR: TEAM: Creative Collaboration. Not just a slogan anymore

Creative Collaboration.  Not just a slogan anymore

Watch on YouTube

Actually creative collaboration never was just a slogan.  But global communication makes global collaboration.  And the resources emerging for  social networking are resources for networked collaboration.

2013 TKR: All life is a game. But some games are easier to win. And others pay better

All life is a game.
But some games are easier to win.
And others pay better:
Self-help--Thinkerer

-
A game has the critical elements of a typical story. There is a quest, a series of barriers to be overcome, and a resolution.  Indeed most effective presentations use those elements.
  • Objective
  • Plan of action
  • Projected outcome

Not your best model for problem-solving? You guessed it. But popular. Look around and watch people use it.

2013 EDU: Build your own museum. You can do that in Second Life

Build your own museum.
You can do that in Second Life
- The Tech Virtual Museum Workshop: "The Tech Virtual is revolutionizing the way exhibition content is created and tested. Learning centers, museums, and cultural institutions around the world can access open source exhibit concepts, designs, and educational materials.
-
This project is creating an “open source” collection of science and innovation-based design concepts that can be used by institutions all over the world.  Through The Tech Virtual, designers and educators from a diverse, international, professional community can share input and resources."
-
Video description.
-
Creative collaboration
Do I need to define that? Do I need to explain it?  Not to the inworlders of Second Life.  That is why we are here.  But maybe for people who are accustomed to the "lean-back" experience of TV.
-
Virtual reality is a "lean-forward" experience.  The links here will not take you to museum-like places where a trained narrator walks you through the scene and tells you what you are supposed to know.  These links invite you to think about how to present things your way.  To tell the story you want to tell.
-
Immersive education.  Participatory learning.   What will this mean to the educational system? I think educators are living in interesting times.  Whether they know it or not.

2013 APPLICATION: Rapid prototyping an entire museum gallery — The Tech Virtual Museum Workshop

Art: Rapid prototyping an entire museum gallery
The Tech Virtual Museum Workshop
Updated 7/27/2015
-
"During summer and fall 2009, The Tech Virtual utilized virtual environments to prototype a gallery renovation at The Tech Museum in San Jose.
-
After the basic prototype was produced, designers were able to renovate the space quickly, to produce an 'after' view of the plan. Through this process we are able to compare versions and receive feedback from users during the process."
