Education communities in Virtual Worlds 
expand into social media

Some selected immersive education groups in Google+, Facebook, and LinkedIn.  These are the ones I found that seemed to have visibility, membership (with people I knew), and focus on virtual worlds.

In the past, Second Life was the only virtual world with widespread interest.  The educational community could live entirely within Second Life.   Not any more.   Opensim has grown to host many education communities in many grids.  What these communities have in common is not location in a particular grid, but an interest in immersive education.  These communities are now growing expanded contacts through social media.  

These social media connections are serving the same functions as educational groups used to serve in Second Life.   But they support multi-grid communities that connect people who share interests, without regard to the grid they are using.  That arrangement works especially well with Hypergrid, which supports travel from grid to grid.

Here are some of the immersive education communities I found in social media.   Feel free to mention others in the comments section; I expect update the main post later to add suggested groups to this list.

Humans have become one of the largest polluters of our atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity. In 1997 an attempt was made to curb dangerous levels of greenhouse atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, to continue to accumulate. The plan, commonly referred to as the Koyoto Protocol, was an international treaty that set binding obligations on industrialized countries to reduce emissions.
-
To help countries meet their targets a carbon trading system was set-up that allows less developed countries to sell their unused carbon quotas to industrialized countries that used more than their quota. Approximately the same time a Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) market was set-up so that individuals and organizations could voluntarily contribute funds to projects that meet a verifiable standard in reducing greenhouse emissions.

New programs coming to Rockcliffe University Consortium in 2014 include research based content which will focus on environmental research and development for economic, social, and technological sustainability. As part of these programs Rockcliffe will be bringing together people from both academic and business backgrounds to discuss and prototype solutions. Areas of interest will include

• advanced materials, 
• aquaculture, 
• power generation, 
• reforestation, 
• sustainable agriculture, 
• waste management among others. 

Some of these programs will provide CEUs (Continuing Education Units) as Rockcliffe rolls out our formal Research-based courses in 2015. To help fund some of the accreditation and information system requirements Rockcliffe has partnered with the Carbon Trading Exchange to be able to offer Voluntary Emission Reduction credits to individuals and organizations with part of the funds going to verified carbon reduction projects and part of the funds helping Rockcliffe to build up our infrastructure.

Writers and videographers (people who make machinima) are the first to have been affected by the new Terms of Service established by Linden Lab in August 2013.  

• New Terms of Service for SL--grants LL the right to sell your work?

These terms could be interpreted to apply to any written material that was put into a notecard in Second Life.  That would mean that Linden Lab has the right to publish and sell such material.  They don't have to get your permission.  They don't have to pay you anything.  They don't even have to acknowledge your as author.

Executive Summary 

• For future content,  just don't put your valuable work into notecards
• For previous content, try to get LL to waive its possible claims on selling your work.
• Even if you don't get a waiver, you will get a good story. 
• If you don;t want to publish that story, tell it to a few bloggers.
