Introduction to Instructional Design for Immersive Environments (IID)
The program outline for this course is set to be completed by end of February with our pilot classes happening in March and public launch at VWBPE. We have a few people that have volunteered to help review the program. If you are interested in helping with the peer review please let Kevin know. The preliminary outline will be available around Chirstmas and first classes will be ready for review starting early January.

International Association for Continuing Education & Training (IACET)
In May we are hoping to take the IID program to IACET for accreditation. This will open the door for the ability of Rockcliffe to start offering Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for this program in addition to others related to continuing education related to best practices. To do that however we need to raise funds for both programming and for the cost of the accreditation process itself.

Rockcliffe Winter Fundraiser
Rockcliffe’s winter fundraiser is now set to go on Indiegogo. Please share the following link with people and ask them to contribute if you feel Rockcliffe should continue as an ongoing concern.
Our goal is to raise $35,000 in 2014 to cover the cost of IACET accreditation, some programming help, and general administration costs. For every $25 donated Rockcliffe will contribute towards the offsetting of one (1) ton of carbon emissions through our relationship with the Carbon Trading Exchange.

Humans have become one of the largest polluters of our atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity. In 1997 an attempt was made to curb dangerous levels of greenhouse atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, to continue to accumulate. The plan, commonly referred to as the Koyoto Protocol, was an international treaty that set binding obligations on industrialized countries to reduce emissions.

To help countries meet their targets a carbon trading system was set-up that allows less developed countries to sell their unused carbon quotas to industrialized countries that used more than their quota. Approximately the same time a Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) market was set-up so that individuals and organizations could voluntarily contribute funds to projects that meet a verifiable standard in reducing greenhouse emissions.

New programs coming to Rockcliffe University Consortium in 2014 include research based content which will focus on environmental research and development for economic, social, and technological sustainability. As part of these programs Rockcliffe will be bringing together people from both academic and business backgrounds to discuss and prototype solutions. Areas of interest will include
  • advanced materials, 
  • aquaculture, 
  • power generation, 
  • reforestation, 
  • sustainable agriculture, 
  • waste management among others. 
Some of these programs will provide CEUs (Continuing Education Units) as Rockcliffe rolls out our formal Research-based courses in 2015. To help fund some of the accreditation and information system requirements Rockcliffe has partnered with the Carbon Trading Exchange to be able to offer Voluntary Emission Reduction credits to individuals and organizations with part of the funds going to verified carbon reduction projects and part of the funds helping Rockcliffe to build up our infrastructure.

2018 EDU: VWBPE spreads over March, into April

VWBPE spreads over March, into April
Early report on the start of VWBPE (Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education) because some events are coming early. VWBPE thus recognizes that a virtual world conference comes to the participant, at no travel cost and negligible travel time.  As a result, events do not need to be concentrated in a single weekend, but can be spread over a longer time.  That gives participants a less hectic experience and reduces the time conflicts.

Do we have a professional learning community (PLC)
in the virtual worlds (MUVEs)? #WVEDU

Sort of.  We have a many educational organizations and activities in virtual worlds and some loosely organized communication among them.  But they do not yet form a cohesive community with community plans or community actions. Can we form a stronger professional community?

  • If these groups increase collaboration, they could make a PLC

2013 HELP: Newcomer Welcome Kit

Things newcomers often ask for. And brief instructions on how to use them.

The contents of this kit have to be given away in Second Life because they live only in Second Life.  You can pick up a copy of the kit at the Hobo Helpers HQ:

The contents include land vehicles, boats, planes, houses, avatars, and clothing

If you don't own land, you need to go to a sandbox to rez some of these things, so the kit carries landmarks to several sandboxes, including the one on Hobo Island, the one at Rockcliffe, and the one on Cookie estate

Opening boxes: Some things, especially clothes, come in boxes.  They will be objects and will be represented by the box shaped graphic. In general , clothes that you are to wear will  be represented by various clothing like graphics.  To put on clothes you find the item in your inventory, click on it, and select wear.
-
You don't wear boxes.  You rez them on the ground, then click on them and select "Open."    You then tell the system to copy the contents to your inventory. You may get lots of items.  You can then look through them in your inventory and pick what you want to try on.

Important:
When you want to wear something, you don't have to take off what you are currently wearing.  Usually things that you wear will replace what you are currently wearing.  If you take off your clothes, you may appear naked.
