- This has long been a profitable business.
- Text books, videos, lectures, audio files, are common formats.
- Online disruption:
- All these can be delivered online at almost no cost.
- Several formats can be on offer for any common topic.
- Students could choose the format that works best for them.
- Schools could provide the content at little cost.
- Pod-schoolers and home-schoolers could access the content at little cost.
- Each item of content could be evaluated for effectiveness and user satisfaction.
- The best items could have very wide distribution.
- The content can be distributed to millions of students.
The relevant skill
- Specifying the relevant skill:
- Evaluated practice in the relevant skill.
- It is easy to specify the relevant skill for a course of study:
- What does the student have to do to get credit for completion?
- The answer, in many cases is pass a test.
- Schools won't like that answer.
- They will claim that they are preparing students for life.
- They must be imagining a life of passing tests.
- But if they need degree credentials for your target career, then passing tests is a skill you need.
- But if they need to work with others in their career, then working with others is a skill they need.
Evaluated practice
- In home economics class, students learn to prepare food and are evaluated on their work.
- If the evaluation is demanding enough, they are ready for a job as a cook.
- In history class, students read text and answer questions about what they read.
- They may be ready for a job reading text and answering questions.
- That "job" is going to college. It does not pay, it costs.
- Even in history, students can practice working with others if the assignments support it.
Evaluated practice online
- A DTA can provide a lot of evaluated practice in online learning
- Project-based learning with team projects can practice collaboration skills.
