2014 EDU: BIZ: Teaching how-to in virtual worlds: Compensation models

Teaching how-to in virtual worlds:
Where is the compensation?
-
  • People in virtual worlds like to help new people learn.
  • You can build a hobby on that.
  • If you want to build a business, you need a more durable model.
  • People may want to teach, but they have to earn a living.
  • Unless they are independently wealthy, they will favor something that pays.
  • Schools teach classes in virtual worlds. Teachers are paid by the schools
  • Can people get paid for teaching the skills needed in virtual worlds?
  • Here I start a series on possible answers to that question

Possibillities

  • Self-study instructional packages for sandbox (or private land) use.
  • DIY kits with enhanced instructions.
  • DIY kits with live instruction as needed.
  • Instructional builds with fee-for-access.
  • Instructional group with membership fee
  • Non-credit course from instructional institution.
  • For-credit course from instructional institution.

Kits and groups

Self-teaching instructional kit for sandbox (or private land) use

  • User learns to produce a product in a series of exercises.
  • Product can be anything, but user will know when it is done right.
  • That outcome is described as the course objective:
  • On completion, user will have a working instance of...
  • Kit includes invitation to kit user group for shared help among users.
  • Kit includes all the assets needed to complete the project.
  • Creator promises no assistance, but monitors user group for questions.
  • Kit may include tutorial videos.
  • Tutorial videos produced by kit creator can also market the kit.

DIY kits with enhanced instructions or instruction as needed

  • Like self-teaching kit with instructor conferences added.
  • User conferences with creator are streamed and curated.
  • Users send questions to creator, creator responds with video demo.
  • Demos are archived for reuse with the same kit.

Instructional areas with fee-for-access

  • Private, group-managed sandbox.
  • Managing group, instructors and learners in appropriate roles.
  • Charge for joining group or charge for access to sandbox.
  • Sandbox has instructional builds for use any time.
  • Instructors are available at scheduled times to help.
  • Instructors may answer questions and demonstrate.
  • Videos may be made of Q&A sessions for reuse and promotion.

    Instructional group with membership fee

    • The group starts with some number of skilled content creators.
    • The content creators are selling their products on Kitely.
    • They create a blog and post instructional content in it.
    • They have a group role of instructors
    • The group establishes a group role for learners.
    • And charges for admission.
    • The group has a sim, region, or world.  It maintains a sandbox and stores there
    • The stores sell things to support content creators.
    • The stores are public access, but the sandbox requires group membership
    • sandbox might charge to enter-- buy a pass

Non-credit and for-credit courses from instructional institutions

How to handle a Hypergrid address

From any Hypergrid-enabled grid, paste the address into the address bar of Firestorm and press enter. Or paste it into the world map search bar of any viewer, search, and click Teleport when the destination is found. If it doesn't work, don't give up. Try again in couple of minutes.  Sometimes the first try fails (probably times out).  And try again a few hours later. Some hypergrid destinations are offline part of the day.
