2013 WRITE: Second Life Poet Wins International Competition

Second Life Poet Wins International Competition

The International Lumen/Camden Poetry Competition has been won by a poet active on Second Life. Thanks to all of you who entered.... The winner is Patricia Averbach who many of you will know as Keykey Underwood. Her poem 'Smoke Rings' was selected from about 1,000 entries by the judge, the highly acclaimed American poet Anne Stevenson.

Patricia wins publication of her debut collection of poetry, work with an editor on her collection, 50 copies, a launch reading in London, and promotion of her book. You can read her winning poem on the competitions page of wardwoodpublishing.co.uk

The competition was promoted internationally in a variety of ways, including notices on Second Life. I'm delighted that a writer from Second Life has won, and especially one who is so well loved in the virtual writing groups.

All entry fees for this competition go to help the homeless in three London Cold Weather Shelters. The competition will open for entries again in September.

A voice track was planned for this film, then as I watched with only music I discovered that there were many other stories dancing across the visual landscape than the one I proposed to tell.

So here is my story without the stringent bounds of leading prose. For those of you that would like to know my original theme, here are the words.

"First there are only tomorrows
the future at our fingertips

we wonder why we are here --
what miracle, plan or cosmic accident brought us to this place and time.

we make our choices -- we live with consequences

and if we are lucky -- we can leave with no regrets

only memories

only expectations"
