User-built virtual worlds: where we can play, work, create, collaborate, and share with other people
User-built virtual worlds are a form of virtual reality with standard user controls developed in Second Life and extended to OpenSimulator. The standard user controls let users move from one virtual world to another without having to learn new control methods. Users build worlds to suit their purposes: Education, art, entertainment, storytelling, games, sailing, racing, model railroading. 

User-built

  • We get or make avatars to represent us in the virtual worlds.
  • We can build things to make our virtual world look the way we want.
  • We can write scripts to make our things do what we want them to do.
  • Or we can buy things already built and scripted and put them in our places.
  • It is much like furnishing a home.  And we can have virtual homes if we want.

Computer simulated virtual environments are becoming easily available at low cost. They have long been available in computer games, but those are of interest only to gamers, mostly young.  Adults are more interested in social activities, either directly productive (business, education), or for entertainment (music, stage performances, travel).

Another sample of social 3D

  • Visit a virtual train station (on your desktop).
  • Click on the screen to go 3D.  
  • The little half-circle at the bottom of your screen represents you. 
  • If there are other people there, they may appear as a box with a picture.
  • In social 3D people are usually represented as avatars.
  • (Registered users can provide a picture.) 
  • Move your cursor sideways to look around
  • Press the keyboard up-arrow to move forward
  • If you see something interesting, hover the little red circle on it.
  • It may do something if it sees you looking at it.
  • Press Esc to get back to old 2D controls.

  • I had to make the box and put on the texture.
  • I had to create the function and attach it to the box.
  • Thought question:  Why is a little box easier for the user?

Works by Arcadia Asylum, Aley Arai, and other names have been gathered by Ada Radius into an archive now being maintained by New Media Arts in Kitely grid.   They are accessibe to the Hypergrid and should be full perm and free to copy.

The New Media Arts board of directors agreed to add my collection of Arcadia/Aley builds to their libraries, and host it at Kitely grid. I've been collecting for years from my own imports, all the stuff +virtual christine had at Sanctuary grid, and whatever else I could scarf up around the HG before it disappears. I wanted to donate it to an organization that should be around for a while. -- Ada Radius

Remembering my own school experiences, I think that ADHD is often just intolerance for boredom.  But there are recognized differences in the way people learn, so another problem may be the attempt to force everyone into the same learning mold.  Here is a different learning method that may be more suited to some people and to some tasks.
