2016 HELP: HG:Get people to the right destinations on opensim and hypergrid. HGProjects

Get people to the right destinations
on opensim and hypergrid.  HGProjects
OpenSimulator and hypergrid offer lots of destinations.  We need to get people to the right destinations fast.  If they have trouble getting to a place they find interesting, we risk losing them.  This article describes some common transport methods.
  • Information is based on my experience on Kitely and HG, using Firestorm 64bit
  • This may not apply in some other grids on with some other viewers.
  • Scripts you may need are in this kiosk:
  • Welcome kiosk for community collaboration 0.4

    • Q: What happened to the Friday event notices you were carrying twice a month?
    • A: They weren't drawing enough interest and alternative sources came online.  I am now running a short  form daily near the top of this blog. A more comprehensive collection is in  Selby's daily news collection.

          Firestorm hop (text friendly)

          • Works well in your home grid, gets people to specific coordinates.
          • To get it, go to the location, click the Firestorm Nav Bar.
          • ex:  hop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II/125/129/25
          • Copy/paste into notecard, text article, IM, or local chat.
          • User instructions:
          • paste the Hop into the Firestorm Nav bar, Enter.
          • The hop you get on HG to some other grid refers back to your home grid.
          • It probably will not work from another home grid.

          Web address (text friendly)

          • Has this form:  grid.kitely.com:8002:Cookie II
          • grid.kitely.com:8002 is the grid address.
          • Cookie II is the "world" (varregion).
          • In Kitely, you can get the world address from the Explore Worlds page.
          • Search for the world that you want the address for.
          • In other grids, ask the grid operator.
          • User instructions:
          • In World Map (Crtl+m), paste HG address into the Find bar. Click Find, TP
          • Web address cannot get people to specific coordinates.
          • Best set up a welcome center at 128,128 and use walkin TPS to locations.
          • I sometimes see an address given in a form that starts with http://
          • That form does not work for me and probably not for newcomers.
          • The http:// looks like a url.  People are likely to try it as a web address and give up.

          Landmark

          • Landmarks work well ingrid or across hypergrid.
          • User instructions:
          • Double click on a landmark to go there.
          • You can give a landmark on click with an appropriate script.
          • A landmark in a notecard can only be retrieved in the grid where it was embedded.

          Walk-in TPs (ingrid)

          • These work well and are suited to a welcome center or other busy location.
          • To work, they must be placed by someone of authority on the land.
          • Authority requirements may differ in different grids.
          • In Kitely, the Walk-in TPs do not work immediately if the world has to start up.
          • Walk-in TPs are ideally suited for a region welcome center where they serve
          • to take people to other locations in the varregion.
          • Collision Teleport script

          Welcome Center

          • Any varregion needs a welcome center to direct people to the location they seek.
          • A welcome center would be at 128,128, the default arrival point.
          • People cannot find locations in a varregion without help.
          • Walk-in teleports at the welcome center are an excellent solution.
          • Cookie II bigger, better, beyonder. A 4X4 now, 16 old style sims

          Hypergates

          • Hypergates are walk-in TPs that take people to locations across the hypergrid.
          • I have tried to use them, but have not found a script robust enough to suit me.
          • For now, I recommend providing landmarks for hypergrid destinations.
