Discovery art is a natural fit for virtual worlds.  This is art you can walk around in, art you can explore, art that makes sounds, art that moves, art that can react to your action.  Such art cannot be depicted in flat pictures, although pictures can show a few details.

When you go into a virtual world, you need to learn how to do things, starting with walking and talking. That can't be hard. Every baby does it. Without reading the instructions. That is because babies are born with a built in ability to learn. You don't lose that ability when you grow up. This series shows how to write beginner instructions for virtual worlds to reactivate that ability.

• The starting steps for using the Hypergrid, rewritten in self-teaching mode.
• Tells you what you need to be able to to do. (Learning/teaching objectives)
• Gives brief instructions and/or points you to more help if you need it.
• Learning is not about what you read, hear, or see. 
• It is about what you are able to do when you have learned.

What are:  Hypergrid? OpenSim? Virtual worlds.

With growing interest in virtual worlds, OpenSim and the Hypergrid, we need some clarification of what these terms mean.  People who come into an OpenSim world after years of experience in Second Life find the world quite familiar, but easily overlook the important differences.  People looking into virtual worlds for the first time may easily overlook Hypergrid and OpenSim worlds because these do not advertise widely. This article provides an overview of virtual worlds and shows how OpenSim and Hypergrid fit in. 

• Virtual world: a simulated 3 dimensional environment with users appearing as avatars
• OpenSimulator: Open-source software that creates and runs virtual worlds 
• Hypergrid: Set of conventions that allows avatars to move from one grid to another

This week at the Short Poetry Workshop we explore the multiple types of the Lipogram. There are several types of Lipograms where only one specific vowel is used in the entire poem, or where a letter of the alphabet is eliminated and can't be used in the poem. Other typed exclude a specific word or words with a specific number of letters.
