It already has most of the needed features:

- Persistent virtual worlds
- Accommodates multiple users as avatars.
- Supports avatar organized groups.
- Supports voice and text communication locally and in groups.
- Supports inworld building and programming.
- Has an inworld economy.
- Decentralized: (Own not only your land but the whole grid.)
- Why metaverse decentralization is important
- Interconnected (by the hypergrid).
- Supports inworld building and programming.

My conclusion
- Maybe we should call it a pre-metaverse or a protoverse.
- At any rate there are multiple virtual worlds around that offer most of the expected features of the metaverse.
- Other than the worlds of the hypergrid, these virtual worlds are not connected.
- We might say we have a decentralized metaverse at present.
- I am not sure we will ever see virtual worlds letting their users travel off to their competitors.
- But someone might create a universal registration (UR) site where multiple grids accept the registration on UR.
