2016 EDU: Poster walks for history month in Kitely A collection of history resources in KItely.

Poster walks for history month in Kitely
A collection of history resources in virtual worlds
Web pages can be displayed in virtual worlds like Second Life or OpenSimulator.  Such displays can offer a convenient way to aggregate and present web-sourced information.  This article shows this concept with an aggregation of history-based sites in a virtual world, Kitely.
History web-walks assembling
  • Use a web walk for presentation in a virtual world,
  • Posters remain available for people who want to go back.
  • Contents are on the web for later review or citation.
  • People can take copies of the walk for later use with other people.
  • People can display a web walk anywhere by wearing it.
  • Hypertext presentation for 3D worlds: Web-walks
  • A place for a learning community.  Or even a class.
  • A class?  Is a class a learning community?
  • Education-related articles in this blog

An overview is always available
-

The web walk presentation

  • Posters show web pages on prims.
  • People can read pages on the prims or on their own browsers.
  • Walks collect broad topics and show suggested order for reading.
  • Presenter can walk and point out important aspects of particular pages.
  • People can take copies of walks as they choose.
  • People can reuse walks for their own presentations.
  • The overview can show the main outline in the names on the walks.
  •  Each walkway can give notecard on click.
  • The posters show web pages that serve as sections.
  • People can scroll the web posters or open any web page in their browsers.
  • Virtual world presentation mixed with web presentation.
Each visitor sees the pages they select
  • People can select the web page to see by clicking on the panel.
  • People can set the viewer to display pages automatically as they walk by.
  • Each person in the audience chooses what they want to see by clicking on it.
  • The walks can remain available for visitors to use later.
  • A walk can present ordered sections
The walks can be displayed in rows
  • Rows suggest an ordering of the walks
Here a pentagonal display
  • A polygonal display suggests no order of reading.
I can wear a walk to display it anywhere
  • I attach it to avatar center, because that does not move much
  • I can edit it to change its position relative to the attachment point
  • Usually, I just have to raise it a bit above the avatar head.
  • Wear objects/edit them
The polygon view shows multiple walks
  • I can identify each walk in floating text.
  • Or I could make a sign for each walk

Like a book

  • The walks are like chapters in a book.
  • The articles are like chapter subsections.
  • The a collection of walks is like a part of a book.
  • Or, if the collection is big enough, like a book.
