2016 NEW: NMA: PEOPLE: HG: If I bring new people into Cookie II, how do I get them to my place?

If I bring new people into Cookie II,
how do I get them to my place?
Community entry plans could lead a few communities to take responsibility for managing an entry path for newcomers in cooperation with other communities.  If newcomers arrive at a single location, it is easier to have welcomers onsite but the site needs to provide easy access to the other community sites.  Here I provide suggestions as to how to do that.

              Bring them in

              Get them to your place

              • Give people the address of your welcome center on your website.
              • Give both the Firestorm Hop and the web address.
              • Firestorm Hop:  hop://grid.kitely.com:8002/Cookie II/125/129/25
              • Web address: grid.kitely.com:8002:Cookie II
              • Put a welcome kiosk where you expect new people to arrive.
              • Welcome kiosk for community collaboration 0.4
              • You may not be able to put a walkin TP there.
              • To work, a walkin TP may need to be placed by someone with land authority there.
              • OSSL adds functions to LSL: threat levels control misuse
              • Put your the landmark to your welcome center in the kiosk box
              • Give landmarks in the welcome folder.
              • Give people a reason to come to your place: Free community-related things:
              • avatars, clothes, landmarks, calendar, events, contacts, groups, sandbox.
              • Tell them how to join your community group and send IMs to the community.

2016 HG: NEW: BIZ: Starting in a virtual world need not be a puzzle game. Imaginary grid-starter viewer. HGProjects

Starting in a virtual world need not be a puzzle game.
                Imaginary grid-starter viewer.   HGProjects
A grid-level starter viewer offered by a grid could make it easier for newcomers to get started in virtual worlds by providing needed or useful defaults.  It would also give grid operators a special feature that would work in their interest. Here are some suggestions for designing a HG friendly viewer based on Firestorm.

Who would care about making it easier for newcomers to start in virtual worlds?

                • Grid owners
                • Content creators
                • Entertainers
                • Event producers
                • Educators
                • Many communities

Does it really have to be complicated?

This week the Short Poetry Workshop will be doing a fun group poem called Fold-It. Each person participates in creating a poem by writing one verse and passing it to their neighbor. Except- you only get to see the one line written prior to yours. You won’t know what the poem is about until it’s done! So join us to learn, write and share the Fold-It poem.

2016 HG PEOPLE: Every grid needs a G+ commuity: G+ communities grow in the Hypergrid

Every grid needs a G+ community.
G+ communities grow in the Hypergrid
Many grids on the hypergrid have G+ communities.  A grid community serves as a marketing tool and can keep grid users informed about what is happening or is going to happen on the the grid.  It helps build communities in the grid.  It provides a valuable communication route when the grid is unexpectedly down.  It provides a convenient way to make promotional content available to bloggers and potential customers.

Working for social good in the virtual worlds
Over 60 international non-profit organizations with causes ranging from environmental awareness to LGBTQ activism, AIDS education and Parkinson's support, groups that fight to end homelessness or promote emotional healing with the help of horses, are gathered in the virtual world of Second Life to do everything from training to fundraising.

"The barrier to entry in Second Life is very low and for people in the non-profit sector who want to reach a global audience we can make it even simpler!" says Rhiannon Chatnoir aka Joyce Bettencourt in RL, community manager at Nonprofit Commons.

2016 HELP: Scripting resources in virtual worlds, LSL and OSSL. summary

Scripting resources in virtual worlds, LSL and OSSL. Summary
LSL is the main scripting language used in the virtual worlds.  OpenSimulator also offers OSSL, which provides functions not available in LSL.  Several libraries, documentations and tutorials are available. Here is a collection of well-known resources, reviewed and reorganized from previous articles.  It is intended as an introduction for people with experience in other programming languages.

Two scripting languages in virtual worlds

                                  • LSL Linden Scripting Language.  The only language available in Second Life.
                                  • OSSL Open Simulator Scripting Language.  Additional functions available in OpenSimulator.  OSSL is not a complete language but a set of functions.
                                  • In scripts written for OpenSim, the OSSL functions can be used as part of the available function library.  The scripting language is still LSL.
                                  • Many OSSL functions are limited so that objects using them can only run them if put out by people with authority in the parcel.

OpenSimulator and hypergrid offer lots of destinations.  We need to get people to the right destinations fast.  If they have trouble getting to a place they find interesting, we risk losing them.  This article describes some common transport methods.
                                          • Information is based on my experience on Kitely and HG, using Firestorm 64bit

Arabella Nemeth is guest host where we’ll write poems speaking in the “voice” of an inanimate object. Select language and concepts appropriate to your object. Think about how a Victorian silver teapot would express itself differently from a modern video controller.
