2016 ART: PEOPLE: Art of the virtual worlds. Curation and categories

Art of the virtual worlds.  Curation and categories
Since virtual worlds offer new possibilities in art, new categories are needed to describe such art.  Here are my preliminary suggestions, as of now.  I may have a revised list next year.  I hope I do.  I hope I am smarter next year.  Feel free to suggest additional categories in comments below.

Mini-monoverse Short Poetry Workshop, Tue 11/15, 7pm SLT

This week the Short Poetry Workshop presents the Mini-monoverse, a poem made up of two stanzas of five three-syllable lines with a rhyme scheme of a/a/a/a/a for the first stanza and b/b/b/b/b for the second stanza. Multiple verses continue the mono-rhyme scheme. So join us at the Short Poetry Library to learn, write and share your poems.

HG Safari is virtual world community dedicated to touring the hypergrid.  Here is an illustrated account of our tour of the Paris Opera house.  We did not see the Phantom, but there is a chandelier.

We get together in virtual worlds.

Play games or dance
Virtual worlds are very much about what we wear.  Virtual clothing costs little and is easy to change.  So lots of us have many outfits, some that fit every occasion from the Easter Parade to Halloween or from New Year's to Christmas.  Here are just a few examples from the Halloween season.

The sneaky glitch of unicode and 
the mystery of the right HG address that fails
You copy-paste a hypergrid address into the world map.   The map says the place does not exist.  The grid operator (in Europe) says the grid is running and tests the HG address, verifying that it works.  But your copy still does not work.  You can see that you have the right grid address but it does not work for you. Don't blame the Hypergrid.

The scenario where I found it

  • Somebody in Europe posts a hypergrid address in a Google+ community, inviting a visit.
  • I copy-paste that 
  • My world map (in Firestorm) reports that it can't find the place.
  • The grid operator says the grid is running.  
  • This is not a fault of Hypergrid.  What is happening?

  • The fan site is so well done that it deserves a report.
  • Even if it never comes back.
  • But in OpenSim, we can make OAR copies of our worlds.
  • Kitely can also store a world, taking it off line, but ready to be reactivated.

Find friends fast when you start in Kitely-- 
the secret of the login page
Nubie friendly: People come into a virtual world, see no people, and don't have any friends.  If they use a feature on the Kitely login page, they can probably find friends fast.  But they gotta know the secret of the login page.  The key to the secret lies in the destination panel, upper left side.

  • "What do I do next?"
  • The first question of newcomers when they enter a virtual world.
  • Even old timers from other virtual worlds may start that way.
  • But but hover your cursor over the panel marked Destinations.
  • And you get a set of suggested imaged destinations.  
  • Ignore the first 2 on the top line.  Click on one of the other images, then login.  
  • You will  probably enter a world that has someone already there.
  • Other grids may offer the same feature on their login page, so look or ask.
  • If another grid has this feature, mention it in the comments on this blog. 
  • (I hope it becomes popular in OpenSim,)

  • Find nearby people in Firestorm by a click on the button showing 2 heads.
  • That button will be somewhere around the edge of the viewer screen.
  • To contact that person double click on the name.
  • Then look for the IM option in the panel that comes up.

2016 VIB: EDU: OSHG: VIB (browser-viewer) imaginary use case: Education

 VIB (browser-viewer) imaginary use case: Education
OpenSim does not have a viewer in the browser (VIB) yet, but people are working on that.  2 demos show that it is possible with worlds that function like a limited version of OpenSim.  Assuming it can be done, what would we do with it?  Here is a bit of speculation about how educators might use it to work better with their classes.

Demos

Common problems avoided

  • Students have difficulty finding and installing the viewer.
  • Students have difficulty starting the viewer and logging into the grid.
  • Students arrive at orientation island and find naked people propositioning them.
  • Students can't find the class island and find no one who can help.
  • Students arrive at the class island in the middle of a trench and can't get out.
  • (All of these have been cited by people teaching classes in SL.)

Autobackup for self-managed grids (including Sim-on-a-Stick). Autobackup will automatically create an OAR backup at specified intervals and put them in a place you choose, including cloud drives like drop-box, or Google drive.  It can delete anything older some number of days if you want.
