2016 HG: OSHG development committee: Planning for OpenSimulator/Hypergrid development. HGProjects

OSHG development committee:
Planning for OpenSimulator/Hypergrid development.
Updated 9/3/2016
Emerging concerns about progress in OpenSimulator/Hypergrid development call for new initiatives to find ways to make sure that the development is meeting the needs of the users.  Here I propose a plan to develop an organizing committee to take early steps in that initiative.

Action plan

  • Create an organizing committee (Need leader first)
  • Organizing committee creates standing OSHG Development Committee.
  • Need person to take on the task of heading the organizing committee.

What does the future of virtual worlds look like?

  • Join Will Burns in Second Life to discuss the past, present and future of The Metaverse @ Community Virtual Library - Bradley University.
  • The Future of the Metaverse: Blueprints for the Evolution of Virtual Worlds
  • With: William Burns III - Vice Chair IEEE Virtual Worlds Standard Group
  • When: Sunday, September 18th @ Noon SLT (3pm EST)
  • Duration: ~2 hours or less, break halfway, and a Q&A discussion for the latter part.
  • Location: Community Virtual Library - Bradley University
  • http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bradley%20University/29/146/24
  • Materials from discussion will be provided for take-home.
  • For more information about the speaker, see the following:

Action plan details

Organizing committee tasks

  • Gather names and contact info of people who would be interested in being on the OSHG development committee
  • Or who would be willing to provide it with knowledgeable advice on call.
  • Identify some needed subcommittees for the organizing committee and people willing to head them.
  • Identify some needed subcommittees for the OS development committee and people willing to head them.
  • Develop a preliminary mission statement.
  • Identify possible funding sources and develop a preliminary report on potential amounts

Probable subcommittees for the Organizing Committee

  • Membership:  track and build membership for both committees
  • Promotion:  Publicise the work, objectives, and needs of both committees
  • OS development committee and subcommittee planning
  • OS development funding
  • Military liaison

Some probable subcommittees for the OS development Committee

We need subcommittees representing required capabilities and all stakeholders.
  • Script engine(s)
  • Physics engine(s)
  • Viewer liaison
  • Database management
  • Hypergrid
  • Compatibility management
  • Security management
  • Newcomer onboarding
  • Community development
  • Promotion and marketing
  • Military liaison
  • Academic liaison
  • Commercial grid liaison
  • Non-commercial grid liaison
  • Educational uses
  • (more TBD. Objective:represent all stakeholders in OpenSimulator)
****************************************
Since I represent one of the potential funding sources (New Media Arts--NMA), I cannot take the lead on forming these committees.  I will, of course, support the effort with my blog and contact list and with planning as needed.   I cannot commit NMA without board approval and I cannot ask for board approval without a credible plan as to how the money will be spent.
-
I will, however, promise to provide up to $20,000 USD if we have a credible plan, NMA board approval, and NMA gets up to $10,000 in matching small (less than about $500) donations.  (Matching donations are needed because of rules on nonprofit organizations.)
-
The most promising arrangement I see for funding OSHG is somewhat like this:
The main difference is that the NMA (and possibly other organizations) would agree to fund specific projects, so that the projects would not be dependent on crowdfunding.  The projects would be selected and specified by the OS Development Committee, preferably in amounts of about $2000 USD each.

    The Hypergrid WIP Show

The Hypergrid WIP is a one hour "show & tell" of works in progress or recently completed. All builders from beginner to pro are invited.  Presentations are in voice and text.  For text presentations, best bring the text in a notecard and paste it into chat.  Voice presentations may be captured in video.  Stills and videos from the show may appear in this blog and elsewhere.
