Like a detective story.
Could you do it better in your favorite virtual world?
Are your students the heroes who will solve this problem?
Consideration of how a story could be created in a virtual world to engage students in activities that develop skills on digital literacy, teamwork, and presentation.  Plus knowledge of some selected STEM content.

2020 #VWEDU: WRITE: Resources for teaching copyright and fair use. And maybe a few other things

Resources for teaching copyright and fair use.
And maybe a few other things.

Free online educational resources.  Offered by groups with an interest in promoting knowledge about a specific subject. Students can study these.  What else could they do with them?

"This video explains why copyright matters, as we are all both creators and consumers of media online--music, movies, images, books and other writing, etc."
  • What could students do with this material besides watch videos?
  • Make something that has their very own copyright.

2020 #DTA: #VWEDU: WRITE: Would you use a virtual world to teach creative writing? Imaginary worlds are another kind of virtual worlds.

Would you use a virtual world to teach creative writing?
Imaginary worlds are another kind of virtual worlds.

Suggestions about how to use virtual world resources to teach creative writing: Writing in the scene, working together apart, scenes as prompts. role-play, cold reads.
  • Indeed, all virtual worlds were initially imagined.
  • One reason we like virtual worlds is that we can create the worlds we imagine.
  • And we can share that imagined world with others.
  • Articles in this blog about writing

How would a DTA use virtual worlds to teach creative writing?

2019 #DTA #VWEDU: WRITE: Write on site. The scene as a story prompt. Mystery Manor as a story source

Write on site.
The scene as a story prompt.
Mystery Manor as a  story source

How a Digital Teaching Assistant (DTA) can manage assignments for a class in creative writing where the writing is prompted by a 3D scene.
Does this desk suggest a story?

  • DTA: Do you see a story here?
  • Me: Not one.  Several.  An old quill pen tells the era.  An ancient scroll--what secrets does it hold? Maps--maps tell many stories about travels.
  • DTA: Think of a character who fits one of the stories you thought of.
  • So begins one scenario of the DTA as writing coach.

The DTA as a writing coach on site

  • In a virtual world you write in a place. The place is a prompt.
  • Here are illustrations of how the DTA can use the place to trigger writing practice.
  • This model would work best in groups.
  • Writing is only a solitary task if you don't want readers.

2019 #VWEDU: WRITE: A Christmas Carol and the times it tells: Dickens project in virtual worlds

A Christmas Carol
and the times it tells:
Dickens project in virtual worlds

A presentation about the times represented in the famous story by Charles Dickens.

Dickens Resource Center

Go there

A presentation?

  • Well, where is the auditorium?
  • This is not an auditorium presentation.
  • How can you have a presentation without an auditorium?
  • In a virtual word we often have a presentation in a place relevant to the subject.
  • How does that work?  Where does the audience sit?
  • The avatars don't sit.  The walk around in the place.
  • That won't work.  They can't see the slides while they are walking.
  • We don't present with slides.  The places they walk to do the job of the slides.
  • You can't do a power-point presentation without slides.
  • We don't usually do power-point presentations.
  • Okay, so go on with your story  But you are doing it all wrong.
